First of all, every family needs a "travel" bag arrangement. Purchase each child a bag that can be shared and traded amongst siblings or friends riding in the car. Each bag should have a variety of different activities. Bag 1 may have a rubix cube, brain teasers, flash cards and an etch a sketch. Bag 2 could have crayons, a pencil, paper, coloring books, stickers and a magna doodle. Bag 3 could have magazines, books and small photo albums. Start the bag with one child and in 10-15 minutes, switch the bags out so that new activities can be done from a new bag.
Games are always fun for road trips. You can play number games, letter games, name games, color games and other games that usually hold kids attentions. For example, you might tell everyone that they have to find objects to spell out your last name. If you last name is Smith, you could say S-Sun, M-Man, I-Igloo, T-Tent, H-Horse. All of the items have to be spotted outside of the vehicle and only one person can use that object. I spy is also a familiar favorite and is a great way to pass the time.
Give each child a pencil and a sheet of paper. Have them write a story about where you are going. If you are visiting family for the holidays, have them write a story about who they are going to see and where they are going. If you are going on vacation to the beach, your child can make a list of the things they might see or things they would like to do while at the beach.
Nowdays, many families have CD players, DVD players and game systems in their cars. laptop computers are also nice to take along in the car. Computer games and the internet can be accessed with a wireless internet connection. Thes items can help some kids stay entertained while they are in the car. Remember to pack a bag of movies, cd's and game software.
