Activities for Everyone on Mackinac Island, Michigan

This Midwest Island Offers More Than Just Scenery

Marcia Frost
Mackinac, Mackinaw, it's a bit confusing to some, but it's all referring to an area in Michigan with water as blue as the Caribbean. Take a journey back in time to this island in the Midwest where cars aren't allowed and lilacs bloom along the historic roads. It is known for its scenic views of Lake Michigan, but here's plenty to do here besides checking out the scenery as you go from Mackinac City to Mackinaw Island.

Exploring History

Fort Mackinac is open seven days a week from May to October. Visitors can watch the re-creation of the 19th century events, with activities for children available. In downtown Mackinac there is plenty to do as you can experience the period first hand through five buildings that allow you to participate in activities like using an old-fashioned spinning wheel or a blacksmith's hammer. The Richard & Jane Manooglian Art Museum is contains artifacts from prehistoric to present day.

Mackinac Island State Park

The never-ending water of Lake Michigan is just the beginning of the Mackinac Island landscape. The Mackinac Island State Park also contains an array geological formations, forests and limestone bluffs, allowing for spectacular views of the area. The park is free of charge and is open every day, though the visitor's center - and restrooms are only open from May to October.

Carriage Tours & Bike Rides

Horses are plentiful on Mackinac Island and they are a great way to see the sites. Carriage tours can take you through town, the park or the Butterfly Conservatory. Group tours are available or you can arrange for a private one. It is even possible to rent a horse and buggy if you want to try it for yourself. If you prefer something a bit more modern, bicycles are available for rent throughout the island

Special Events

There are a number of special events on Mackinac Island that are worth a trip. The Zoo-de-Mack is a weekend built around a 51 mile bike ride that goes along Lake Michigan. This May event, which had over 2,500 participants in 2009, also includes parties with live bands. In June, the Mackinac Lilac Festival celebrates the island's flower. The Mackinac Island Vacation Travel & Tourism organization maintains a blog which is a great place to read about upcoming events on the island.

Getting There
Mackinac Island is located in Michigan's Strait of Mackinac, between the state's lower and upper peninsulas. Getting to Mackinac Island is half the fun. It can be reached by accessible ferry from St. Ignacio or Mackinaw City. The ride is about a half hour. If you have a boat of your own, you can take a leisurely ride and park it in a slip on the island. There is also a small airport with commercial flights direct from Detroit.

Considerations

There are many combination packages for Mackinac sites and some locations are free of charge. Visit the Mackinac Island State Park Commission's website for more details. Also remember that there are no cars allowed here so bring your walking shoes and allow for plenty of time to get around. And don't forget the Mackinac Island Fudge -- definitely worth the calories!
