Activities in New Hampshire During Christmas

I grew up in southern New Hampshire and have always found that the New England States are particularly pretty during Christmas. If we're lucky, we'll get at least one glittering snow fall to make the whole scene look like a Christmas card. But aside from appearances, there are also a lot of fun activities you can do in New Hampshire that will help make the season fun.

Take a Sleigh Ride

There are several farms throughout the state that give sleigh rides. I personally think they are appropriate for everyone - families, romantic couples, even groups of friends. A quick search on the internet will reveal that there are quite a few farms that give them, especially in the White Mountains.

The best one I ever went on including marshmallow roasting by a fire out on the trail and a cup of hot chocolate and warm apple crisp when the ride was finished. I went with my Girl Scout troop and I remember thinking that if it were simply just a ride, it wouldn't have been so fun. I think it might be even more fun now as an adult - roasting marshmallows especially has always been a favorite.

View Christmas Lights

I know, you can do this no matter where you are in the United States, even the world. I am in Germany right now and I am looking at a house that is all lit up for Christmas that I can see from the window. But there's just something about viewing lights on the older New Hampshire colonial-style homes (or even some of those housing boom gigantic homes that are newly built) that speaks Christmas to me.

If you're just passing through, you don't need to go out of your way to find the Christmas lights. I only ask that you pay attention as you are driving around. All towns and cities in this lovely state have more than enough festively-lit homes to make you smile. And for me, the more kitschy the setup is, the better!

Christmas Festivals and Tree Lightings

Just about every weekend, my parents and sister tell me about a festival or tree lighting ceremony they're about to attend. Give a New Hampsherite a reason to bundle up and trek out in the cold (all in the spirit of not letting it defeat them) and they'll gladly oblige.

If you want to take part in this time-honored New England ritual, ask at your hotel if there are any local festivals going on. They usually involve vendors, Santa Clause, Christmas music, and other cheery activities that will put a smile to your face.

So, remember that the Holiday Season is what you make it. If you find yourself in New Hampshire during this time of year, it is worth it to do some of these activities, even if you're not going to be here for very long.
