Activities in Lincoln City, Oregon

Adam Sparks
Oregon's coastal region is a destination location, drawing thousands of visitors every year with its rugged beauty and wide range of outdoor recreational activities.

Lincoln City, located on the northern Oregon coast about 88 miles southwest of downtown Portland, offers a variety of opportunities, whether you're looking to get away and relax or get outside and get active.

Beach Activities in Lincoln City

Lincoln City features seven miles of sandy beaches, meaning plenty of chances for beachcombing; exploring tidepools, hunting for agates and playing alongside the Pacific Ocean. Shore fishing is popular here, as is clam-digging when it's in season. You'll also catch the occasional surfer riding waves in the frigid ocean waters at the south end of town.

Lincoln City rests of the 45th parallel, meaning the town is halfway between the equator and the North Pole. Warm equatorial winds collide with the cold polar winds from the north, creating excellent conditions for kite-flying. You'll see dozens of kites along beaches throughout town and particularly at the northern half of Lincoln City. Buy a kite at one of the area's many kite shops and get in on the action.

Lake Activities in Lincoln City

Lincoln City is home to Devils Lake, which is located near the south end of the city just a couple of miles inland of the ocean. Bordered by Devils Lake Golf Course to the north and Devils Lake State Recreation Area to the south, Devils Lake offers a handful of outdoor activities.

The lake itself stretches for three miles and is half a mile wide at its widest point. Hiking, boating and fishing are popular activities here, with boat docks and available motor boat, paddle boat, canoe and kayak rentals. The lake also features several camping options, with yurts, cabins and teepees available for rent at Devils Lake State Park, and tent-camping and RV sites nearby, as well.

When to Go

Wet, chilly weather is always a possibility on the Oregon coast, even during the warmest and driest months. As such, pack light rain gear and warm clothes for nighttime, even if you're traveling to Lincoln City during the summer. July, August and September are the warmest months, with daytime averages in the low-70s; July and August are the driest months, with rainfall averages of less than two inches per month. Most of the rest of the year, plan on daytime temperatures that average from the low-50s to the mid-60s and precipitation levels that top double-digits from November through March, with December the wettest month at 15.82 inches of rain.
