Activities for Mother's Day

Lollipops and Hikes

Mother's Day is a good time to celebrate by having special mom-child activities. There are many things that parents can take the time to do with their kids that will not only give them something fun to do, but it will give them time to bond.

Making lollipops can be a neat project for children over 10. Make sure you have a candy thermometer before you try it though! Here's a recipe for easy lollipops that can be any flavor you can find.

Lollipops
1 Cup Sugar
1/3 Cup Light Corn Syrup
½ Cup Water
¼ Tsp Vanilla (or Peppermint extract, or Mapeline, or any other flavoring you'd like to experiment with)
½ Tsp Food Coloring (You can experiment here too!)
Combine Sugar, Corn Syrup, and Water in small saucepan. Cook over medium heat until at "hard crack" stage on your thermometer. Remove from heat, let stand 1 minute. Pour onto toothpicks or Popsicle sticks on greased foil or cookie sheet.

Alternatively, if you'd rather make something less sticky, try making fortune cookies! The recipe can be found here.

Another activity that you could try out is going for a hike. Everyone's still recovering from winter in Maine by the time Mother's Day rolls around, so getting out of the house on a nice Sunday afternoon is a fun way to spend some healthy outdoors time with your kids (or your mom!). Grab an atlas and look for the list of hiking trails in the front, or go to the nearest state park. There are trails in many places that often lead to a very scenic overlook where you can sit and have some sandwiches for lunch.
