The town of McKinney, Texas is one of the fastest growing towns in the Dallas / Fort Worth Texas metroplex area. The Parks and Recreation department of the City of McKinney has an expansive list of programs and activities for people of all ages, but this article will focus on what McKinney has to offer senior citizens ages 50 and older.

Note: There is a fee associated with most of the activities, but McKinney residents qualify for a deeply discounted fee and the prices shown in this article do not reflect the discount.

The Senior Center offers a Beginning Acrylic Painting class where you get hands-on experience with different styles of acrylic art. Fee for the class is $2.00 for non-residents. The class schedule for 2008 is on Thursdays from 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm on May 22, Jun 5, Jul 10, and Aug 7.

The Senior Center offers an AARP Safe Driving course that enables you to build better and safer driving skills. The class fee is $10.00 for non-residents. Class schedule for 2008 is Thursday and Friday from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm on Jun 26 - Jun 27, or Saturday from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm on Aug 9 - Aug 16.

The Senior Center offers several basic computer classes. The Computer Basics class will give you tips on using a computer for your personal use. Class fee is $7.00 for non-residents and the schedule for 2008 is Friday from 10:00 am - 11:00 am on Jul 11 - Jul 18, or Thursday from 3:30 pm - 4: 30 pm on Jun 5 - Jun 12. They also offer a class on Microsoft Word Basics, Excel Basics, Intro to the Internet, and offer a computer tutoring where you can ask questions about your specific wants and needs with your personal computer. The fee for each of these classes is $7.00 for non-residents and dates and times can be found by calling 972-547-7491 or 972-547-7480.

The Senior Center plans a great variety of trips where you can explore and have a great adventure with others with enjoy similar interests. They have day, evening, and overnight trips. To learn about the newest trips call 972-547-7491. These trips are very popular and tend to fill up quickly, so call early and plan ahead to be sure you get a in on the trip you want.

The Senior Pool offers several Fitness and Aquatic Activities for seniors. The fees for each activity are based on your preference. You can pay a daily drop-in fee of $3.50, or purchase a Visit Card. Visit Cards fees are $24 for 8 visits, $33 for 12 visits, and $40 for 16 visits. The fitness classes offered are "Not Yet Yoga", Healthy Start, Beginner Yoga. The water classes offered are Hydrotraining, Aquatraining, Aquafitness, Hydrofitness, Aquayoga, and a synchronized swimming class. There are also lap swim and water walking times available free of charge for seniors on Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.

The Senior Recreation Center offers monthly activities such as bridge parties, bingo games, mah jong games, ping pong, movies, domino games, wood carving, chess, dances, quilting and sewing session, and much more. For dates and times call 972-547-7491.
