Things to Do at the Tulip Time Festival Kickoff on May 1, 2010

Matt Giraud won't be performing at the Tulip Time Festival after all, but that's no reason to change your plans to be in Holland on May 1. There are plenty of reasons to attend the first day of the festival.

Saturday's events start at 8:00 am with the Tulip Time Run. Whether you participate in the run or watch from the sidelines, consider sitting down for a while afterward by taking in a trolley tour through Holland. Each tour lasts 75 minutes and costs $13 for adults and $6 for kids ages 5 to 12. Tours run from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm that day and depart every 30 minutes.

Afterward, check out the free Art and Craft Fair, which runs from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. Don't miss the Quilt Show, running from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm. It costs $5 for everyone ages 14 and up.

You'll want to stop by the carnival, which runs from 11:00 am until 11:00 pm. There is a minimum purchase of $10 in Midway Bucks, which are good for the carnival's rides, food, and games. They have a great deal if you're part of a family group; $25 will cover a family of up to six people. If you're not into carnival food and games and prefer to spend all your time on rides, opt for a wristband. Good for unlimited rides, it costs $20 that day, since it's a weekend. During the week, it's only $17.

At 7:00 pm, check out the Barbershop Parade of Quartets at Christ Memorial Reformed Church. Tickets to this 90-minute event cost $16. This event includes a competition in which the audience will choose the winner.

Another option for 7:00 pm takes place at the Civic Theater. The Butler Did It costs $20 and lasts about 2 1/2 hours.

Cap off the night with the fireworks show at 10:00 pm. There will be live music until 11:00 pm.One of the world's largest flower festivals, Tulip Time Festival is an annual event that celebrates Holland's Dutch heritage. This year's festival begins on May 1 and runs through May 8. Tulips begin blooming in mid-to-late April and generally last through mid-May, depending on the weather conditions. For additional information on activities throughout the festival, see the Tulip Time website.

You probably should say that Holland is in Michigan; I was ready to go overseas! :) This sounds like a nice festival. Tulips are such pretty and varied flowers!
