Adam Lambert Album Cover: Authentic Artistic Expression or Publicity Stunt?

Hartley Engel
Have you feasted your peepers on Adam Lambert's debut album cover? The Adam Lambert album cover (the cover of his debut album, "For Your Entertainment," that is) is stirring up quite a bit of controversy among Adam Lambert's millions of fiercely devoted fans. Quite a bit of controversy indeed. As can be expected, many fans absolutely love the wildly androgynous photo of Adam Lambert on the cover of "For Your Entertainment," but, truth be told, quite a few are greatly disappointed with it.

Yahoo blogger Lyndsey Parker (a gynormous Adam Lambert fan) loves the photo's "absolutely fabulous retro vibe" but, at the same time, believes that many fans (heterosexual males in particular) will be put off by the androgynous-looking photo and will thus be too embarrassed to carry it up to the cash register of a Wal-Mart or Best Buy.

Lyndsey Parker's article has, at the time of this writing, received an eye-popping 7,867 comments. The remarks range from the ridiculously supportive to the degradingly obscene. Many of the mean-spirited comments were clearly penned by semi-iterated pinheads, but I digress.

Well, this raging heterosexual male Adam Lambert fan has no qualms about carrying a copy of "For Your Entertainment" up to a cash register (Maybe it's because I, unlike many Adam Lambert devotees, was actually around during David Bowie's heyday?) But I have to agree with Lyndsey that some dudes probably would feel self-conscious about being seen toting a "For Your Consideration" CD, but those fellows are clearly a little insecure and - dare I say it? - homophobic.

This is not to say that I'm crazy about the cover art on Adam Lambert's hotly-anticipated debut album, "For Your Entertainment," because, quite frankly, I'm not. I do think it's just a bit too feminine - and not quite androgynous enough. Moreover, I'm not sure whether it was a calculated decision on Adam's part to get people talking, or whether it was done out of an authentic sense of artistic expression. In other words, does Adam really "feel" what the picture represents or is the picture a publicity stunt?

In the final analysis, of course, it doesn't really matter. A lot of fans say that it's all about the music and the cover of "For Your Entertainment" is irrelevant.

I have to agree with them.

I love it, but then again, I'm a girl. I don't think he's going for trans-gender at all. I think he's a gay man who likes makeup and flashy purple hair. What's the big deal?

Haven't seen it. I like him well enough but I'm a country and religious music fan myself.

@ Neely: Great points, as usual. It's been awhile -- nice to hear from you again. :-D

I like the cover. I wouldn't worry about heterosexual men being embarrassed they didn't seem to be embarrassed by Bowie or Michael did they? True lovers of music aren't going to care about such things.

The cover will stand out that's for sure.

Just clicked on the link to the cover ~ gufFAW!!! Well, THAT should take care of the questions. And, no, the cover doesn't matter, nor does the sexuality of the performer. I think he looks great, but not exactly crush material for your average teenage girl. Which is maybe exactly what he's going for.

If the music's good, the cover doesn't matter - Annie Lennox dressed in short hair and a suit, Sinead O'Connor a shaved head and cut-off jeans, Pete Burns looked very much like a woman. No one cares if the music is good.

OMG, of course it's Adam's authentic vision. This depiction is the essence of Adam Lambert. If he wanted to calculate which cover would sell the most he would have chosen one of his most recent masculine looking stylistic photo shoots with the pouty lips and glaring eyes. Coulda done that. Woulda sold more based just on the cover. Say what you will about our Glambert, but he is BRAVE and fearless. Not afraid to be himself, and that's just what he is doing here. He has been dreaming of doing his own thing on his own cd for years and would not compromise his image on the cover to base it on anyone's expectations. Oh, yeah, and I love the cover. Can't wait to hear the cd. Bring it on, Adam!
