Adam Lambert AMAs Performance: Shoots for Sexy, Relies on Raunch at 2009 American Music Awards

The American Idol Runner-Up Performs "For Your Entertainment"

Saul Relative
Adam Lambert promised a performance at the 2009 American Music Awards that would take his audience to the edge. He said it would excite. Adam Lambert said it would be sexy. He said it would be different. And the 2009 American Music Awards held Adam Lambert's performance until the very end, playing on the enormous popularity of the 27-year-old American Idol-discovered vocalist to keep the audience's attention to the very end (the AMA for Artist of the Year was presented to Taylor Swift just before Adam Lambert's performance).

And Adam Lambert did not disappoint...

Known for his dramatic performances when he was a contestant on American Idol, Adam Lambert pranced, danced, pushed, shoved, and kissed his way through "For Your Entertainment," the first single from his debut album of the same name that drops Monday. He dragged a woman across the stage. Lambert walked two humans on leashes and on all fours. And there was a lot of sexual pumping, especially of the face-in-crotch variety. The production seemed to be an homage to excess and exhibitionism -- almost a command performance "for your entertainment."

But did it go too far?

Undoubtedly, there will be a number of detractors that insist on belaboring the points of Adam Lambert's androgyny and/or homosexuality, that instead of being sexy, Adam Lambert's performance was more raunch than rock. And they would be correct. But the announcer told the audience that the performance would be outrageous -- and it was.

Was it entertaining? By all means. Lambert has a voice that won't quit. He exudes charisma like a higher-pitched Elvis. His humping and grinding and kissing may not have been sexy but it conveyed the message of the song, that the singer was no angel and he was there "for your entertainment."

And what kind of Adam Lambert performance would it have been without at least one of his patented ululating screams? He gave several, but two really long ones, including the final free style scream to end the number.

Adam Lambert, who launched "For Your Entertainment" on Ryan Seacrest's radio program, was introduced, appropriately enough, by the American Idol host at the American Music Awards.

"For Your Entertainment" debuted in the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart at No. 84 this week, one of the biggest jumpers for the week.

The album, "For Your Entertainment," hits retailers and is available for download on Monday, November 23.

Madonna did this type of stuff kind of regularly--people are still shocked?? Big difference, of course--Adam can actually sing worth a damn.

Your all going on and on about how great his voice is....REALLY??!! His performance was absolutly terrible! I'm not a homophobe, but that was digusting and classless, and would have been no what gender he did it with (And may I point out he was doing it with both?) But the truly important part was that his singing was terrible!! Everyone says that that screaming this is so amazing!! My cat does the same dang thing when she's in heat...

I love how this article stated it...it wasn't sexy...it was pure raunch! Very poor taste... He's an idiot.

What a disappointment! Adam Lambert was the main reason I stayed with the show until the very end. It's a shame he doesn't realize a simple performance that featured his fabulous voice would have been enough. Whoever is advising him on image needs to rethink the plan. Remember, the extreme right is in a panic because we elected an African American president. I can only imagine the hurt they will cause if they decide to attack Adam Lambert's persona. At least President Obama would get some relief for awhile! Come on, Adam. Focus on making good music that features the beauty of your voice. Leave the extreme antics for those less talented.

How times have changed! Some have compared him to Elvis and could you imagine Elvis doing something like that? Of course, Adam has been open about his sexual preferences and...again..times have changed. Will the public go along with his performances and will the shock value get him even more attention for awhile? Intrigued to see what happens!

Okay, okay...so let's hate on Adam because his performance was out there......what about enimen and 50 cussing up a storm, what about rhinna and her almost nothing attire..seriously....take a chill pill people

His performance was inappropriate and it has nothing to do with being a hater or being prude. It was in poor taste. This was a music award show - he should of stuck to just singing without all the unnecessary antics. If doing people on stage is what Marie would do - let's hope she doesn't ever get a spot on the AMA's. The show is about singing and dancing, not raunchy, unncessary, antics used to shock people.

There is no doubt that the guy can sing but that performance was tasteless and raunchy. Compared to the other performances, his was awful. Maybe the reason everyone feels refreshed by Taylor Swift's innocence is because they are tired of those disgusting performances like the one by Adam yesterday. I loved the show until he performed - horrible.

Taylor cannot sing...she talkes her songs, she has zero talent - someone is paying big bucks to promote her - probably her mother.
