Adam Lambert Meets Jamie Foxx on AI

American Standards on American Idol

Meucci Cameron
Tonight the guest mentor to the American Idol contestants was Jamie Foxx. Not a big surprise to me, I always thought Foxx would go straight into recording as his love of music is obvious. He gave each AI contestant personal advice that really pertained to their issues on the show. Jamie Foxx either did his homework or is an excellent judge of character, or both.

As the other mentors (excluding Randy Traviss), Adam Lambert blew Jamie Foxx away. All Foxx could say was, "What?! You don't care about who I am at all!" Meaning Adam showed no fear or intimidation. Adam Lambert said that was weird since he was honored and nervous to perform in front of the Oscar winning actor and recording artist.

Tonight Adam Lambert sang "Feeling Good" by Nina Simone (written for the 1965 musical "The Roar of the Greasepaint - the Smell of the Crowd"). Lambert made the most dramatic entry on the AI stage and once again proved to the audience he can take over the show even when others do well. There were no terrible performances tonight, but none came close to Adam Lambert's... again.

Though Adam threatened to put a rock edge to the classic he was performing, he kept it theatrical. It was a better performance than I expected. Though all of the AI contestants utilized a full orchestra tonight, Adam really brought them onto the stage with him. Starting the song at the top of the staircase and singing his way down, Lambert brought just enough Broadway for it to work. The note Adam Lambert held at the end of the song lasted almost 10 seconds and was pure from start to finish. (Note to Matt Giraud: that's what Jamie Foxx was trying to teach you.)

Here is what the AI judges had to say:

Randy Jackson: "...it was a little too Broadway for me, but you are in the zone..."

Kara DioGuardi: "... my mouth drops open... you're shocking in a good way..."

Paula Abdul: "...you make me feel better than good...

Simon Cowell: "...what I get from you is that you want to win... best entrance we've had on this show...I love Randy complaining that you're theatrical, it's like complaining that a cow moos..."

After tonight's American Idol performances I will stick to my choices for the Season 8 top three: Danny Gokey, Kris Allen and your next American Idol... Adam Lambert!
