Adam Lambert Performs "If I Can't Have You" on American Idol Disco Night

Turning Disco into Ballads

Meucci Cameron
It was obvious from the first moments on the American Idol stage tonight that Adam Lambert would be doing a ballad. Clad in a sharp black suit and tie with plain white shirt, hair all slicked back like Elvis, waiting for Adam is getting harder each week. I was really hoping for something off the wall tonight. What we got was "If I Can't Have You" by the Bee Gees.

I am a fan of the 70's rock group the Bee Gees. I just thought it was sort of the easy way out for the Adam Lambert. Usually Adam goes for the least obvious choice. The vocals were flawless, delivering his usual falsetto with ease. I did not feel the emotional connection the judges (well Paula Abdul and Kara DioGuardi) claimed to feel. I like Adam Lambert when he rocks better.

The judges were, of course, gushing. It now is more like a consult with peers than a judging. Even Simon Cowell knows better than to try to advise the front runner of AI Season 8. They now just sit back and enjoy the Adam Lambert show, then gush when it's over. Usually rightfully so.

Tonight the American Idol judges said this of Adam Lambert's performance:

Randy Jackson: "...you are ready right now, dude...he is a hot one tonight America..."

Kara DioGuardi: "...the way you connected...it's inspiring..."

Paula Abdul: "...I felt your pain...I felt your vulnerability...you will be in the finals..."

Simon Cowell: "...I would have put $10,000 that you were going to do Donna Summer... vocals were immaculate..."
Ryan Seacrest commented that Adam Lambert had turned Paula Abdul into a 'pool of Adbul'....funny guy, that Ryan.

Any way you look at it Adam continues to lead the AI Season 8 contestants in singing and performance. Though this was not my favorite performance from Lambert, it was still better than 6 of the other contestants. It would be truly amazing if Adam Lambert's fan base let him down. Don't forget two Idol contestants leave tomorrow night on the results show.

    Great recap!

I like Adam, but I thought this performance was boring and predictable. I think he needs a one week visit to the bottom 3 to get a realty check.
