Adam Lambert's AMA Performance: Raunch Factor Not the Worst Part

Adam Lambert Creates Controversy with Lewd American Music Awards Performance

Hartley Engel
Adam Lambert performed "For Your Entertainment," his debut single, at the American Music Awards Sunday night and it is the talk of the Internet. Indeed, Adam Lambert's performance at the American Music Awards will go done in history as one of the most controversial live television performances in history. Among other things, it featured simulated oral sex, crotch grabbing and a makeout session with a male (I think) keyboard player. As well, Adam took a tumble and nearly caromed off the stage. Was it raunchy? Sure. Inappropriate for a family audience? Oh, most definitely. Will Adam Lambert end up on Sarah Palin's sh*t list? You betcha. Was the raunch factor the worst part of the performance? Absolutely not.

The main problem with Adam Lambert's AMA performance was his singing. He was expending so much energy prancing around the stage feeling up dancers that, quite frankly, his singing sucked. What is the point in Adam Lambert getting down and dirty (and risk hurting himself) if his singing is going to suffer - and boy did Adam Lambert's singing suffer on the AMAs. And what a travesty that is, for Adam Lambert is one of the finest singers to come along in ages (he is arguably one of the best singers of all time). He demonstrated this repeatedly on American Idol - and it is primarily his singing that touched people at the heart level (Yes, his good looks and sex appeal are a big part of his appeal - but the overarching element in the mix is the singing - it's the singing, stupid!)

Now, one could argue that Adam Lambert's insanely controversial live performance at the American Music Awards was a brilliant PR move. After all, everyone and their brother is talking about the Adam Lambert AMA controversy and, to be sure, it will be a major topic of discussion on the Web and around water coolers for days to come. What better way to promote an album (Adam Lambert's album drops today)?

If Adam Lambert wants to enjoy longevity as a performer, though, he's got to make sure that he focuses more on the music (I pray that his major label debut album has at least one incredible song on it - the title track certainly does not rise to that level) and less on theatrics - or he's got to learn how to jump around the stage and sing well at the same time. It's not the X-rated nature of his performance on the AMA show that was so offensive, it was the fact that he was willing to lower his standards as a singer to make a splash. Is that not selling out?

Come on Adam, you're better than that.

Some people get a little bit too excited about themselves. Or perhaps he was anxious to undo the image he had to maintain on American Idol. In either case, he certainly "blew" it, IMO.

I agree, the song itself was a big bore for me. His shrieking was awful and his voice didn't sound like it did on Idol. Too bad.

In his pre-show interview, he said there would be "fireworks." His performance was a fail fizzle for me. Not sexy, just bad taste (no pun intended)! I dont care if he wants to kiss a guy on stage but oral sex and fingering that woman's crotch, and giving the finger along with too much tongue with screeching vocals. Godawful role model for pre-teens and young people who loved him on Idol.

Sounds like the guy needs a talented manager to create the right image. He has the looks and talent but doesn't seem able to handle the right image and performance aspects while giving people what they want: superb singing!

Come on Adam - think of the big picture! You are so talented, use it wisely for a broad range audience - don't blow it - the "shocking" aspect of the performance will get old quick (its far better to leave something to the imagination) The performances on "Idol" were magnificent - be smart - your future depends on it!

Most of our disappointment had nothing to do with his sexuality.. couldnt care less... but Everything to do with producing a GOD_AWFUL performance in every artistic regard.. it sucked! (no pun intended)

HEY Y'ALL I AM A GAY MALE.....AND REPRESENTING MY GAY COMMUNITY.....I MUST SAY THAT WE LOVE ADAM, ALTHOUGH WE DO NOT SUPPORT THE CHOICES HE MADE FOR HIS PERFORMANCE.....NOR DO WE SUPPORT ANY PERFORMANCES BE IT MALE OR FEMALE THAT PROVOKES SEXUAL ACTIVITY TOWARD THE TEENAGE POPULATION......THERE IS TOO MUCH TEEN PREGNANCY AND PEER PRESSURE OUT THERE THAT WE DON'T NEED TO BE ADDING TO THE GROWTH. ANYWAYS EVERYONE'S SINGING SUCKED LAST NIGHT....I DON'T BELIEVE IT WAS THE PERFORMERS FAULT.....ADAM IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE A FANTASTIC SINGER, HE JUST HAS SOME TOUGH ROADS TO GO DOWN TO DISCOVER WHAT SHOULD AND SHOULD NOT BE DONE AT AN AWARDS SHOW!!

I'm glad you took this angle, Hartley. After reading a few reviews of his performance, I found it on youtube and really, the sexual aspects weren't horrible. If a female performer kissed her keyboard player, we wouldn't be talking about it at all. How many times has Madonna grabbed a male dancer's face and shoved him in her crotch? But you hit it right on the head: Adam's voice sucked last night. He was so off-key!! No one else took that angle (that I've read so far), so as a former music major, I'm truly glad you did. Great article, Hartley!

THAT PERFORMANCE WAS BY FAR THE MOST DISGUSTING PERFORMANCE I HAVE EVER WATCHED!!! I DON'T CARE IF HE IS GAY, THAT IS HIS CHOICE, AND MORE POWER TO HIM, BUT I WAS APPALED BY HIM GRABBING A MALE PERFORMER AND PUTTING HIS FACE IN HIS CROTCH AS IF TO SAY HERE "SUCK IT" AND ALSO WITH THE MAKING OUT SESSION WITH THE KEYBOARD PLAYER.....THIS IS SOMETHING I DO NOT WANT MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER OR SON WATCHING!!!!!!
