There are actually only 3-8% of people supposedly tested for A.d.d and A.d.h.d that this has concurred to. Scientifically there are no tests that can be ran to actually pinpoint these conditions to assure that it is present, only physical evidence has been used and is not totally reliable itself. The main focus of these studies are of course on young boys more so than young girls,so the old saying " Boys will be boys" no longer exist, nowadays when children act out must have something wrong with them.
To say that a child is easily distracted, hyperactive, impulsive, forgetful, disorganized, depressed or has low self esteem we should medically treat them for one or another of these said disorders? That's an idea, let's get as many children as we can relying on drugs to get then through everyday life, like there isn't enough to worry about in society, such as peer pressure through adolescent years.
More so now than ever before parents as well as teachers don't care much for the distraction , it's easier to slap a label on these kids and drug them up,right?I believe that since both parents are usually working there just isn't enough time in the day to spend with their children,to talk,to have family time together, even if it's just 30 minutes. It's so much easier to give them a pill that will calm them down and break their spirits.
I have asked friends, family members and acquaintances to give their opinions and view points.
"I and a lot of people in my life have a form of either ADD or ADHD sometimes I wish I didn't.I don't think it should be considered a diagnosis though because there is nothing wrong with you,you just have to work harder to achieve your goals in life and stay focused"
" I am sorry but I believe ADD and ADHD to be an excuse. It's an excuse for children to not pay attention and get by with it and it's an excuse for the medical industry to make more money.I was diagnosed with ADD at a young age and was told that I wouldn't be able to make it through school without help and I did proving them wrong.
I believe it is how you raise your children and the life experiences that you put them through that make a difference.Sit your children down and talk to them about their behavior and consequences for their actions and if they don't want to,make them, you are still the parents. There should not be any excuses."
"I think that both ADD and ADHD are real but often misdiagnosed and children should not be medically treated for something that has not been studied more in depth. In most cases I would say that it is overrated.Over half the children taking medications for ADD and ADHD become depressed and are walking around like zombies and what kind of life is that for a child?"
"Years ago we didn't have diagnosis such as these.Children were just children and sometimes they got out of hand but parents had more the authority to punish their children than they do now. Nowadays it is not accepted in society and in some states you are not even allowed to spank your child or you go to jail.Growing up I let my children be children but drew a line and they respected it and knew not to cross that line and they grew up to be great adults and have children of their own.
"I believe you should always keep the line of communication open with your children and talk about things but make sure that they respect you.A lot of children have lost respect and it's excuses like saying that they have ADD or ADHD that is put in their minds that they don't have to behave or listen to anyone because they have been diagnosed with this."
Basically your child can not be outgoing, fun, class clown, comedic, have a day that they are upset,be a little tired,misplace/lose things or act on impulse without a diagnosis being put on them.As adults, parents, doctors and just plain members of society do we not fall into some these categories as well? Should we all be treated and taking drugs just to cope?
How about this, let's give our children a stable family setting and they will be aware of their boundaries, they will have the respect and knowledge to know right from wrong and how to act and react in any situation. It starts at home and it starts with actually trying. So give your children the benefit of the doubt to have opinions to say how they feel without thinking something is constantly wrong. After all they are the future to our every being and do we really want them to look back on their lives and believe in their minds that something was always wrong with them.
