Add the Comforts of Home to the College Dorm

Drew Taylor
College freshmen need more than the usual back-to-school supplies. Make dorm life comfortable, functional and fun with these accessories.

Decorating
Painting or using nails is usually a no-no in dorm rooms, but freshmen can still customize their space by decorating the walls. Buy wall-safe adhesives such as Sticky Tack or Command Hooks. Sticky Tack works well for hanging posters and Command Hooks come in different styles to hang everything from picture frames to keys.

Colorful bedding, pillows and a throw rug can help soften the industrial feel of dorm rooms.

Organizational Supplies
Buying organizational gear can eat at the back-to-school budget. Consider the student's needs and the dorm set up before spending too much. Choose products such as under-bed storage containers, which maximize the available space.

Creative solutions are a money-saving option. For example, an over-the-door shoe hanger is an inexpensive way to organize multiple items such as hair styling tools. Miles Kimball has a 22-pocket shoe organizer for $9.99.

Snack Time

If the dorm allows appliances, consider bringing a mini fridge and microwave. Do-it-yourself snacks are an affordable, healthy alternative to fast food or vending machine runs. Compact dorm fridges with modular shelves and a small freezer offer the most flexibility. Use a vertical shelving unit to nestle the fridge, microwave and kitchen basics, such as plates, in one small area.

Keep a manual can opener handy to open snacks. The Sunbeam Bottle and Can Opener costs approximately $10 and features a large ergonomic knob.

Laundry Supplies
A laundry bag or portable hamper can double as a laundry basket. The Tide Backpack Laundry Duffle Bag has wearable straps and sells for approximately $15.

Using the wrong detergent in a high-efficiency washing machine can lead to a sea of bubbles. Consider buying high-efficiency laundry soap because it is concentrated and works in both traditional and high-efficiency machines.

Tools
Basic tools, such as a rubber mallet and screwdrivers, come in handy for assembling furniture. A multi-purpose screwdriver is a space-saving option for the dorm.

Shower Supplies
Remember to bring toiletries, shower shoes, a bathrobe, towels and washcloths or a body pouf. A shower tote keeps shavers, shampoo and all the bathing essentials corralled in one handy caddy.

Bonus Gear

Living in a dorm means close quarters and less flexibility. Bring a small fan to help customize the temperature. A desk lamp is good for illuminating late night cram sessions without disturbing roommates.
