Garden fountains have an intense effect on any outdoor space. They bring in eye-catching splendor, and they also provide the tranquil sound of flowing water. Outdoor fountains are also known to draw in birds and butterflies and make people want to linger by and admire your outdoor serenity. Anyone can incorporate the benefits of an outdoor fountain into their space and there are very affordable options available today. The two most common types are Spray and Statuary Fountains, but there are options available for the smaller garden.
Spray Fountains are also known as lake fountains, pond fountains, or jet fountains, and they are the simplest type. Typically they will come with a pump, power cord, spray nozzle, and control panel with a timer. If you budget allows, you can add lights as an option to provide drama for the water spray during the evening hours. These come in different voltages, pump strengths, and spray patter diameters to suit every budget. You can also get smaller spray fountains that will fit in nearly any sized body of water. Many of these are solar powered so you will not have to worry about electricity and timers. Spray fountains are considered the most practical as they aerate the water providing oxygen content and decreasing the growth of algae.
Statuary fountains run anywhere from simple birdbath-style designs to figurative sculptures that require a lot of space. Conveniently they come in many different styles, so anyone can find the perfect one for their taste and budget. Zen, European, Greco-Roman, modern, religious, landscape, animals and architectural styles are only a sample of the different types of statuary fountains available. These will come with their own built in pump and will need electricity to operate.
Outdoor Fountains for Smaller Spaces
In the urban world however, large scaled gardens are not always possible. But that is not to say that you can not enjoy the simple pleasures that an outdoor fountain has to offer. Your only limit is your imagination. Your local garden center will have all of the tools you need to create a water fountain suitable for your space. It will take less than a simple afternoon to transform your small yard, garden, deck, porch or balcony into a restful retreat by creating your own water garden. They are very simple to put together, and varieties are available for every budget.
You first need to decide whether you need a simple type of container water garden or if you'd like to have a decorative water spout. The container water gardens are for the smaller sized space, and are simply just a pump and a watertight receptacle. The spout type outdoor fountains are a little more extravagant, but if you have the space for it, make beautiful additions to any garden. Either way, there are outdoor fountains available for every space and budget, and they are very easy to assemble.
You will then need a watertight container such as a half barrel, decorative bowl, bucket, or anything that will be sure not to leak water. Place the pump you have purchased in the water, making sure it's fully submerged, with the tubing coming up to the surface. Connect it to your decorative spout, or leave it as it is for a simpler effect. If the tubing on your pump is too short to reach the surface, you can prop the pump up with river rocks or a small terracotta pot turned upside down. Once you have placed your container and pump where you want it to be, you are finished.
Whichever style you choose, you will quickly understand why water fountains are a popular amenity for any garden large or small, and you can easily find something today within your budget. A fountain in your garden can add both interest and ambience to any backyard or porch, regardless of its size. The serenity and tranquility of water is an essential element to complete a garden or outdoor living space. It will not take you long to find something that suits both your space and your wallet. Beautiful gardens are not just for the wealthy anymore; with a little creativity you too can have a garden that rivals even the best neighborhoods.
