Add Personality Pizazz with Crafts for Your Wedding Tables

Sheri Fresonke Harper
This article describes some craft projects that you can have on your dining tables at your wedding. It also describes how craft projects can be used to create a special relationship between the wedding couple and their guests.

During your wedding reception, guests spend an hour or two at the dining tables. Not all of that time is spent dining; much of it is spent in conversation with other guests. If you remember your guests and their interests during your planning, you will include conversation pieces at the center of the table. If you are as lucky as I, you will find that many of your guests would be delighted to make you a creative addition to your table. My friends knew that my husband and I are birders and this provided a theme for their craft projects. My dad made miniature birdhouses and my mom decorated them. It really made the event special.

In general, table decorations should be low, no more than twelve inches tall or thin so that they do not block conversations. Tables should be positioned to allow free movement from table to table. Supplies on each table should include basic seasonings and extra napkins in case of spills. If children will attend the wedding, insure sources of fire like candles and sources of spills like floral decorations are placed well out of reach. At the conclusion of the wedding, plan to allow guests bring the centerpieces home as a memento of the event. A small booklet of the readings and or love poetry is a nice touch.

Three Project Sites With Ideas that Work as Centerpieces

GetCrafty

Painted eggs, mosaic trivets, pictures inside picture frames, origami, topiaries, soaps, candles

Baskets, recipe book, wheat weaving, soaps

Themes

Symbols of love, fertility and partnership include:

Doves, hearts, swans, cranes, cupid, bride and groom pairs, roses, the yin/yang symbol, diamonds, grain, linked chains or rings. Historically, stones showing the coat of arms or initials of the married couple were popular.

Use any of the symbols incised, painted, stitched onto a craft item to personalize the experience.

Evening Events

Candles add a special touch to evening events. Using a mirror beneath the candle can enhance the lighting effect due to reflections. Mirror squares are an inexpensive way to add a mirror to the décor. Many hardware stores will cut them in fourths if you ask and or pay for the service. Be sure to supply matches or designate someone as a candle lighter.

Coverings

To cover tables a number of options are available, but the most inexpensive can be using plastic film that matches your wedding colors. A length of lace from a material store to cover the plastic film will allow the color to shine through, but add a bit of elegance. Taping the table coverings will hide unfinished ends, keep them in place, and help avoid spills.
