Addiction: Making the Right Choices

Nancy Austin
George Jones summed up his sorted love affairs and emotional break-downs later in his career with a song titled "Choices." What's the biggest part of life? You got it baby... making choices. "All my life there've been voices... trying to tell me wrong from right." Or something like that. The point is who you gonna listen to?The little devil on one side or the angel on the other shoulder? One promises whatever you want or whatever makes you feel better. The other promises a clear conscience. I'd like to say the angel promises a clean bill of health, but you could follow the rules and still get into an accident. Yet, the pay off for living right really has more to do with how you feel about yourself in the long run than it does anything else.

Do you like yourself? Well, how you feel about yourself means more than popularity, because you can be the biggest looser in town and have a ton of friends. Who are you really? If you're a drunk who throws blow out parties people don't like you just because they think you're a great person. They like you because you throw big blow out parties. Don't get me wrong. You may give to the poor and sure you've been known to rescue injured or homeless animals. My question is have you been taking care of your health all these years of making others happy. First of all if you drink too much you're not really happy or healthy. The euphoria produced by excessive amounts of alcohol is comparable to the mania experienced during a bad bought with bio polar disorder. Manic anyone? This isn't meant to be insulting. It's just a reality check. Thank me later.

When you're an old person [if you live that long] and you look back over your life do you really want to know you've spent your life getting high to cover up your true feelings? Well, if you're already up there in age it's not too late for you either. Come on... help me save the young ones. It takes more courage to admitt a weakness than it does to just continue drinking and doping. Yet, many people can't stop because they don't want to think about the downward spiral they've been apart of for god knows how many years. Look, it's like this guys and gals. That was then, this is now. So, what? Yesterday, served its purpose. You learned a lot of priceless lessons. Now, it's time to move on. If you don't then you're not growing. You're just drinking yourself to death.

Ok. So, what is alcoholism really? Good question. Cause too many people are clueless. An alcoholic is someone who driinks from the time they get up until the time they go to bed. Actually that's only one definition. Is it possible to be a weekend alcoholic? Yes!!! I can't stress this enough. If you have to get drunk at least once or twice a week you're an alcoholic. If you can't enter a bar without getting drunk you're an alcoholic. Don't believe me? Try it. Don't drink for a month. Come back and tell me in thirty days time did you want a drink? Not did you take a drink... did you want a drink so bad it bothered you? Be honest with yourself.

If you smoke cigarrettes are you an addict? Sure. Coffee? Tea? Dr. Pepper? Well, like the song says theres a fine line between love and hate. Another song. When you look at this way you just might realize we're all addicted to something. Ever ask a psychiatrist if it's normal to want an orgasm to last forever? He probably didn't answer your question, because he feels the same way. Of course it is. You're only human. I'm not saying addiction is acceptable. What I'm saying is that we all struggle with the body.

Most of us enjoy sex.Are we all just a bunch of sex addicts? No. Many of us want to get paid more. Does that make us workaholics? No. When you allow anything to take over your life there's a problem. You're missing out on something. Life as a whole is passing you by. Exercise is healthy. Being fit and sort of slender is commendable. Yet, do you depend on your body to make your livelyhood? Hey, if you're an athelete that's understandable. But if you're an anorexic stripper take a look at yourself on the inside. There's a fine line between self love and self loath. I'm not dogging the adult industry. I'm not admitting to having watched a dirty movie or two either. What I'm saying is if you're a stripper who has to get drunk in order to do your job you're caught up in the race. If you eat once a day or sometimes you don't eat at all or barely for a twenty four hour period you're not dieting for your health. Food is nourishment. If you're not getting any nourishment or you're not getting enough what's the deal here? This all ties back into addictive behavior. If you truly believe stripping is the only way you can make a living you're cutting yourself short. If you're a dancer who eats at least two meals a day, you don't drink too much, you're not on drugs and you realize you could be anything you want to be then you belong to the minority.Live long and prosper. If this isn't the case I'd bite my tongue. Way too many women get stuck in the adult industry for lack of a better idea. Money is addictive. I'm more concerned than anything else.

Over eating is just as much an addiction as under eating. Sorry, but it's true.

And no one is off the hook here. I love my readers too much. You don't smoke, drink or engage in illicit sex... you've got no vices. Are you sure? Life experience has proved differently. I've known a dry drunk or two. Would you rather hang up on someone you care about than listen to their feelings[some of which may hurt yours.} ? ? Would you argue with the wall if everybody else left the room? Any behavior can be addictive. Also, anytime you shut off emotionally you should take a look at yourself. Ask why. Come on lady.. brushing my teeth everyday is addictive. My favorite show is addictive even if it's the only one I have to watch every week. What's the point? The point is what if during your favorite show your daughter just so happened to be having an emotional break down? Would you turn the tube off? We all express addictive behavior in different ways. Never forget it. Live your life by the realization that anything can become destructive if carried too far.

Hey, don't beat me up too much. I know this rant will hit home wih many readers, because addiction is apart of the world we live in. Stay connected to source. Higher Power.
