Addiction: Today and Fifty Years Ago

John Rivers
Drug addiction is a very common problem these days. Alcohol, which is a very strong substance, we know for sure and we fight this addiction very openly but rather unsuccessfully. But we can spot a drunken person easily and we can pretty much tell how does an alcoholic look like, but spotting a drug addict is much harder. There are two levels of addiction:

Legal and so it is not largely condemned

Illegal - possession, selling, using is forbidden by the law. Because of them, wars are fought in Afghanistan, Mexico, smaller wars in Brazil, USA and even TV shows.

Lets think about it. Why is this epidemic such a major problem in the world? Fifty years ago the situation wasn't so difficult.

This has happened because of the fast shift in the civilizations. The world we live in today is far different than it was 50 years ago. I do not have in mind a change in political or economical system.

Lifestyle, value of living has changed rapidly in fifty years. Food and nutrition has change greatly. The credit system emerged and with it - debts. The Internet has not only the ability to speak with others from all over the world, but also to be in the middle of things.

Earlier, there weren't as much as temptations as there are now, literally in every corner of the street. These temptations keep pressuring us, besides, people used to live in smaller communities back then: country sides, small cities, so basically people knew each other well had self control, they feared what others might say. Today most of us live in flats, we are constantly mixing in the society but we are unable to connect to each and make long lasting friendships.

Constant stress and troubles are usual in society today so we feel that we need to suppress them. Humans have learned how to obtain unnatural pleasure and to feel joy from intoxicating substances. But this has a very sad outcome - addiction. We can be addictive to almost anything - chemical drugs, organic drugs, even our behavior. It is enough if it delivers pleasure and stimulates the emission of dopamine in our brains.

There aren't any magic pills discovered yet, that supposed to eliminate addiction. The best way to fight with it is psychotherapy. It is the best way to find happiness in life without artificial stimulus.

The disease can be eliminated - mind and power is the best weapon.

The major shift in society have made us all addicted to something in a way, in most cases we are incurable. Lets be honest, we have bad habits: gambling, shopping, overeating, dieting, video games, surfing on the net, mobile phones and even addiction to sun tan and other habits which off course are below drinking and smoking.
