Adding a Bird Feeder to Your Yard or Garden

If you are wanting to begin to experience the joy that can come from having a bird feeder in your garden, then here are some tips and facts to help you to maximize that enjoyment from your bird feeder. For those of you who don't know, a bird feeder is an object that resembles a lantern that you can put seeds in or other types of food that birds would enjoy, in order to attract birds from the area to your yard or garden. This can assist in bird watching, teaching children about different kinds of birds, or even setting up a video camera to stream the video of the bird feeder to others.

Do not be shocked if birds aren't coming to the feeder right away after putting the bird feeder in your yard. It may take a couple of weeks for the birds to realize that this is a place for food. Also, most bird feeders are also pretty appealing to the eyes of both birds and humans. In addition to this, most bird feeders don't take long to put up and they are fairly easy to maintain.

There are two different types of bird feeders: stationary and hanging. Stationary bird feeders can either be attached to a tree in your yard or on top of a pole in your yard or garden. Included in this variety are ones that can be placed by a window in order to get the birds closer to the house. Just make sure you have some sort of screen so that they don't come inside. Hanging bird feeders can be hung on a porch or a patio or from the branch of a tree. A great way to make it harder for cats to try to attack the birds is by either hanging it up away from an area that a cat can climb, or by getting a pole bird feeder. Pole bird feeders often provide that classic bird feeder look also.

Often, people only use bird feeders in the winter months because that is when their source of food is at its lowest. But, both suburban and urban areas can enjoy the benefits of having a bird feeder throughout the entire year. Some of the things to think about with regards to your bird feeder are the placement of the feeder in the garden and the type of feed that you are going to be providing for the birds.

Hopefully these tips have helped you in your consideration of putting up a bird feeder in your garden. Whether your motivations are enjoyment or education, a bird feeder can be a welcome addition to your yard or garden which will allow some birds to keep coming back and to be a "part" of your family.
