Adding a Border to Your Landscape Bed will Give Your Garden and Yard a Cleaner Look
Best Landscape - Border Options
The most commonly used landscape edging is the black, plastic edger. This edging usually comes in 10-25 feet long rolls. You just simple dig a narrow trench with a shovel or spade and insert the edging. It is about 6 inches tall and the top is rolled to give a finishing look. This black edging usually sits about 1 inch above ground when installed correctly. The pros of the black landscape edging are that it is inexpensive and fairly easy to install. The downside is that weeds can creep over very easily and it does not give the flower bed a stunning appearance.
The next choice is to use concrete pavers. These are usually about a foot in length, 3 inches wide and about 2 inches deep. You can get them in a variety of colors, but the most common colors are tan, red, and brown. These pavers are also pretty simple to install. You will need to carve out a trench wide enough to hold the pavers. The pavers should sit about ½ an inch higher than the ground to improve the appearance of the flower bed. This will also allow you to mow right up to the pavers. Be sure to level the trench by using sand or lime which will also give the pavers a more compound base.
Rocks can also be used to give your garden or flower bed a border. While rocks will not control weeds very effectively, they do have a beautiful appearance. River rocks or limestone stones can be laid along the edge of the flower bed to mark the beginning and end of your lawn. If you wish to have a more effective weed control border, combine the rocks with a black landscape edging border for a great combination!
You can also use old bricks if you have some lying around to edge your flower bed. Old bricks give the garden an antique appearance that many gardeners love. The imperfections will be accented to add an abundance of character to the flower bed. Lay the bricks along the edge of the flower bed to create a border that will be stunning and provide you with many compliments from garden enthusiasts.
One last way you can create a border to your landscaped areas is to use organic materials. This includes dirt and mulch. By digging a shallow trench along the edge of your border and filling it with mulch, you can decrease the amount of weeds that will be entering your garden as well as defining the edge of the flower bed. Some people love this method because mowing is so simple, and the method is simple. The downside is that you will not provide a complete weed barrier and you will have to add mulch each year.
After you have completed a border around your garden or flower bed, you will instantly notice a difference. The landscaped area will draw much more attention and the lawn will even look better. Clean lines are fantastic anywhere in your landscape!
