This year however, I'm determined to find a solution to our no garage problem. One possibility is to sell our home and move to a home with an existing garage; nonetheless, with the real estate market as it currently is, I don't know that my husband will agree to that option. That said, I'm exploring other possibilities.
Building/Adding a Garage to an Existing Home
Ideally a garage, detached or attached would be a wonderful solution. Nonetheless, this is also the most expensive option considering that a garage can cost anywhere from $10,000 - $60,000 to build. In determining the cost, obviously an attached garage would cost more due to construction. Additionally, a two-car garage would cost more to build than a single vehicle garage. Additional costs might include heating, a garage opener, custom garage doors, siding, flooring, etc. In the end however, a garage might be the best investment as it would add value to our home.
Building/Adding a Carport to an Existing Home
A carport is one option truthfully we'd not given much consideration. Nonetheless, after researching this option, I find it can be both an attractive and functional solution. One can opt for a carport that accommodates one vehicle or two, or one that accommodates a vehicle while providing additional storage (almost like an attached tool shed). The cost for a carport is about 35-50% less than that of a garage. It also adds value to a home but is not as good of an investment as a garage.
Purchase a Pre-Fabricated/Metal Carport
Another option is a metal carport. Available in over a dozen colors, I was surprised to find so many options to choose from. In fact, with so many choices it is pretty easy to find a metal carport color and design complimentary to almost any home. The least expensive of all of the options, a metal carport that covers two vehicles is less than $2500. Also the easiest of the options, the carport can be put together in one day. Considering this is a portable/temporary structure, and not a permanent addition to one's home, this option is not a good investment. Simply put, it adds no real value to the home.
Before the end of the spring, I am confident that we will make a decision. No more waiting around for another winter season.
