ADHD Summer Camps: Introducing Camp Buckskin

Merry Strong
It's that time of year again, its summer camp time! As you might guess, there are hundreds of summer camps located around the country ... many of them featuring wonderful programs designed for children who struggle with ADHD and similar challenges.

Camp Buckskin, located in Ely Minnesota, is one such camp. This co-ed program has been in existence since 1959 and caters to children 6 to 18. It can accommodate those with ADHD, ADD, Aspergers Syndrome and learning or social skills disabilities. Sessions are four weeks, in length.

The camp motto is, 'good attitude... good effort... great results!' This speaks volumes, in regard to the dedication and determination of the staff. Their goals are to make sure that every camper has the most enjoyable experience possible and takes with them new skills that will assist them throughout their lifetime.

Aside from traditional camp activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, music, hiking, canoeing, archery and survival skills, Camp Buckskin utilizes a personal growth program. This program is customized, for each camper, based on information provided by parents.

The onsite library is beneficial to all campers, who participate in mandatory (and FUN) reading activity sessions. These sessions are customized, as well. The purpose is to improve overall reading, writing and organization skills.

There is a Registered Nurse on staff, at all times. This means that campers, who are taking medication, can continue to do so while attending camp.

Camp Buckskin is situated on 165 acres of land. There are 16 cabins, each accommodating 7-10 campers and two counselors. These cabins are nestled in groups of four, with each group serving a specific age group and gender. All bedding is provided.

The menu at Camp Buckskin is nutritious AND delicious. The majority is made from scratch, everything from fresh baked rolls to spaghetti to a homemade cookie, now and then. Good manners are stressed, at every meal.

There are several special events, which occur during each session. These include area day trips, polar bearing (an early morning dip in the camps lake), Olympic Day and a final award ceremony.

The weekend schedule, at the camp, is different than that of the weekday schedule. Things are a bit more relaxed and campers are allowed to choose many of the activities they will participate in, during that two day timeframe.

Each cabin decides, as a group, their activities of the day. This helps with team building skills.
