Are you looking for a summer day trip location that is fun, educational, and affordable? If so, a great place to check out is the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, New York.

Our family took a two-hour drive to get there on Father's Day of this year and we all had an absolutely fantastic time! We used an Entertainment Book coupon, so our admission price for a family of four was $31.00. Additionally, kids under 6 are free AND for every admission the second consecutive day is free if you would like to spend an additional day there. It was very worth it for an entire day, and I mean the ENTIRE day because we were happily busy from 10 am until 5 pm. It is also stroller and wheelchair accessible, which is very convenient.

We started the day with an interesting and fragrant demonstration of maple syrup making complete with a taste of the end product. We then proceeded to a pancake breakfast that included eggs, pancakes, sausage, bacon, and orange juice, which was included in the price of admission. The kids explored the train and passenger car. Over at the fly fishing building there was a demo on fly tying for kids and in the same building the kids and dads built beautiful model boats. We visited some of the nearby buildings, learning about life in the Adirondacks, and then made our way back to the pond where the kids participated in a model boat race. They each were given a frisbee for participating, which they were very pleased with. We had lunch in the cafe, which was yummy and reasonably priced, and enjoyed the exquisite mountain views. The children participated in an insect-shaped pinata demolition, and then participated in a program where they built a lean-to. We saw a builder using traditional techniques to build an Adirondack guideboat and the kids enjoyed visiting the Reising Schoolhouse where they were able to walk on stilts and play other fun games of old. Of course, we could not leave without a visit to the museum store, which was well stocked with everything Adirondack from decorative items to books and games for both children and adults.

All in all, I would highly recommend visiting the Adirondack Museum. It is a great place for families, friends, history buffs, and would also be a great romantic day trip for couples. Don't forget to bring your camera! We enjoyed the extra programs they offered on Father's Day, so it is encouraged that you try to go on a day when they have some special programs, such as Lumberjack Days, American Mountain Men, A Sportsman's Paradise, or the Adirondack Harvest Festival.
