It's a yes and no answer really. There are adjustable weight drivers (AWD) out there that are set up for the better players, and then there are some for the mid-high handicap players. The secret to getting one to work for you is to identify your needs and choose accordingly.
Take some time on the range with a few of these drivers. Have your local club pro or club maker watch you hit shots with each one, then allow them to make adjustments to the head of the AWD. With a few tweaks you should be on your way to hitting the ball straighter and longer! Mid-High handicap players will typically find a AWD with a closed face angle. These will help hit the ball with more of a hook bias and help eliminate a slice. There is even a AWD out there that promises that with the right adjustments you can go from hitting a 5 yard fade to a 25 yard hook! Amazing! Simply move the heavier weights out to the toe to hit a fade, or towards the heel for a draw!
For the better player, there is typically a few more options out there. There are "tour" AWD that offer a square to open face angle that will allow the better player to have a few more options in ball flight. They will also come with a few more weights in the kit to further customize the driver. Now, don't feel like the average player is being left out, you can buy extra weight kits that offer a few more options than the standard set that comes with the club, but once the average player is finding the fairway, the typically would not care to hit a slight draw or fade by buying more weights. The other option for these modern marvels is that you can also adjust the trajectory of the shot with these as well. Simply move the heavier weights forward for a lower shot, and back for a higher shot.
Many players on tour using these clubs will adjust the weights based on the course. If you need to hit a draw or fade more often off the tee for the week, simply set the club head up to it and away you go. Once you have the weights around and find that they do what the are advertised to do, you will gain the confidence in the club to take a free rip at it ever time! Just be careful not to change the AWD's weights during the round, this is illegal!
If you have yet to take advantage of one of these drivers, give one a spin, you will be surprised!
