Examining Expenses
The expenses have to adjust to the income in order to make the transition. You need to cut back on your expenses when your income gets reduced. The bills can't remain at the same amounts when the amount you have to cover them with declines. Taking a closer look at the expenses that you have will help you to identify areas that you can cut back.
Daycare/Babysitters
When you have children there is a chance that you have paid someone else to watch your child for one reason or another from time to time. When a two parent home has been reduced to a single income you can remove your children from the daycare. That money can be used for items such as food and clothing. There are also alternatives to traditional daycare centers that will cost you less money. Checking with friends and family to find out if they can help out is a good idea. Teenagers are often inexpensive babysitters; you can even trade childcare with family and friends so you all have a night out.
Electrical Expenses
Electric bills can be rather large if you don't practice conservation or pay attention to what you're doing. Practicing the conservation of energy in the home is a step toward making living off of one income possible. Spending time outside can go a long way to preventing excess energy usage. Only using the lights that you absolutely have to have and changing a few habits like the way that you do the laundry can help too. The clothes can be washed in cold and hung out to dry. Phone charges should be unplugged when not in use. Anything that uses a remote control can be unplugged to cut off the electricity flowing to the object.
Learn to Rely On Yourself
There are millions of things that can be done to save money. Why pay someone else to do something when you can do it yourself? Why are you paying for things that you can make yourself? Little things add up over time. Taking even the change you save by changing one thing can add up to dollars at the end of the year.
One Income One Car
Do you have two cars? If you can get by with one, sell one to help come up with a small savings. Try walking a bit more if things are close to you. The insurance will be slightly cheaper for one than for two. The amount spent on gasoline and tune ups can be reduced too.
Going from two to one income is difficult but it's not impossible.
