Administrative Professionals: Making the Business World Tick

Kerry Mulherin
You've no doubt heard of Administrative Professional's Day, but what is an administrative professional? I refer to the talented office secretary, male or female who greets you upon arrival for your appointment. They always have a smile, and they are the working brain that keeps every office running smoothly. In the U.S alone there are some 5 million administrative professionals, and the trend of becoming skilled for such a position is providing a fast-growing industry for accredited establishments across the country.

An entry level administration clerk will earn around (USD) $28,000, while a legal secretary lands a more handsome paycheck, about $40,000. An estimated 400,000 new administrative professionals in the medical sector will be trained over the next 10 years, seeing this as the favorable area for new college applicants. A staggering 20% increase in skilled office professionals overall is expected via on campus or e-university education.

The options are vast for those seeking such education with fields such as medical and health care administration, transcriptionists, legal, and business administration. All the education one needs is now offered online through various well known colleges. A career as an administrative specialist also affords this special person the edge for promotion, since basic requirements open many doors to other more niche areas of employment.

The smiling secretary you see when you walk into the Doctor's office, the gym or your child's day care center is the single most useful person on the premises. Sure it takes many years of study to become a Lawyer or a Doctor, but the loyal administrative professional is an underestimated breed all of its own. Without their skills of multi tasking and tending to seamlessly never ending piles of paperwork, the entire business world would simply grind to a halt.

Administrative Professional's Day is celebrated in the last week of April each year. It was first introduced back in 1952 by Mr. Harry F. Klemfuss, whose collaboration with the National Secretaries Association sought to shine a light on these dedicated few, and to showcase the importance of what they do on a daily basis. The International Association of Administrative Professional (IAAP) chooses this week in April to not only show appreciation for these dedicated staff members worldwide, but also to provide them with further educational opportunities. Public awareness of the job skills required and promoting growth in the industry by attracting new college students to the field, is also an aim of this International Professional's Week.

Nice job on this! It's so true they keep the wheels turning in the business. My husband is finding that out now that he doesn't have one!

They deserve a lot of respect. When I worked in an office, the two administrative assistants there were the nicest people you'd ever want to meet.

Great article. Funny how they went from being Secretaries 15 years ago to being Administration Professionals. LOL

When I worked at corporate headquarters, I so appreciated the administrative staff. (For a few years, I even had a male secretary. He rocked.) Now, as a freelancer, I groan over my self-employed administrative tasks....... Am I supposed to take MYSELF to lunch on this holiday? ;-)
