When a child sees blood in their stool, they are likely to become very afraid. Unbeknown to them, the blood is most likely caused from adolescent hemorrhoids. Because of the embarrassment associated with hemorrhoids, it is likely that the child will not discuss the problem with the parents. This is why it is important for parents to encourage their children to come to them if they are having any problems of this nature, no matter how embarrassed they may feel. If treated in the early stages, adolescent hemorrhoids are likely to shrink up much quicker.
Parents should also be on the look out for signs of adolescent hemorrhoids. Paying attention to your child's behavior can be a great indicator that there may be a problem. Frequent itching or grabbing of the backside, difficulty or pain when sitting or walking, or blood in their underwear are tell-tale signs that they may be suffering from adolescent hemorrhoids.
Constipation is the main culprit of adolescent hemorrhoids. Hard stools and excessive pushing during bowel movements are consequences of constipation and in turn, can cause hemorrhoids to form. It is important to ensure that your child's diet consists of fruits and vegetables rich in fiber and they are consuming the recommended eight glasses of water daily. Maintaining healthy bowel movements through diet and exercise are vital in preventing constipation and thus preventing adolescent hemorrhoids.
Treatment to get rid of adolescent hemorrhoids differs from the treatment options available for adults. It is not recommended to use over-the-counter creams and medications for children, as they are often too abrasive for their bodies. Rather, simple home remedies can be used to soothe the pain and help to shrink the hemorrhoids. Sitz baths for 20 minutes several times a day can help to shrink the hemorrhoids and alleviate the pain. Aloe Vera gel is also very popular, as it soothes the rectal area and keeps the pain at bay. Of course, it is important to check with your pediatrician before trying any medications or home remedies to attempt to cure the adolescent hemorrhoids.
All in all, hemorrhoids are bothersome to anyone, but adolescent hemorrhoids can be even more unfavorable since children often are unaware of the symptoms. With the humiliation associated with adolescent hemorrhoids and the private part of the body where they occur, it can be daunting for children to tell somebody that they are suffering. Parents need to be aware of their child's behavior and look for the signs that something may be wrong. In the long run, your child will be happy to be relieved of the agonizing pain.
