Adopt a Pet and Save a Life

Alyssa Russo
Adopting a pet can save an animal's life. Whether you are looking for a dog, cat, bunny, rodent, etc. There are many pets out there available for adoption. It is best to check with your local shelter to see which pets are available. I've also found that there are some places on the internet, such as Petfinder that shows you the pictures of the pets you are interested in and gives a brief description about the animal as well.

I've also noticed that Craigslist has a lot of pets listed with people that can no longer take care of their pets. Be careful on this site though because you never know who is posting the information. If you are wary of using a site like Craigslist, stick to a local shelter's website or Petfinder. At least you know where the animal is coming from.

If you've never had a pet before, make sure that you really want to make the commitment of owning a pet. It would be sad for the pet to have to be given back to the shelter because someone realized it's not what they wanted. If you are not sure if you want a pet, try fostering one.

Fostering a pet means that you provide the pet a temporary place to stay until it has the chance to be adopted out. You would take the pet into your home and take care of it. You could foster the pet for a few days, weeks or up to a few months. This is a great way to see if you want the responsibility of having your own pet. If you feel that it is working out, maybe you could adopt the animal yourself and keep it. If not, you can return the pet and it will be ready to be adopted out to another home.

You may be required to pay a fee to adopt a pet but most pets will have a vet check, already be neutered/spayed and have their shots. When you buy a new pet from a pet shop or breeder, you have to pay the costs of having them fixed as well as other vet visits, which could be more costly than paying an adoption fee.

I know on Petfinder, if you are searching for a particular breed, you can do a search on different breeds of animals. Say you are looking for a Persian cat, you can put Persian in the breed type in the search engine. If you do not find the breed you are looking for, then you may want to find a rescue center that deals with a particular breed. There are sites called Persian Rescue for Persian cats or Pit Bull Rescue for Pit Bull dogs. If you really want a particular breed with all the breed characteristics and pedigree information, then you can go to an actual breeder or breeder's website and find out if they have any available. If you are not looking for any particular breed of animal, but rather just to have any breed of pet, whether it be a dog or cat, then adopting would be an excellent way to save an animal's life. You can provide them with a loving home that they may never have been able to have if it weren't for you.
