Adopting My Cat from the Guilford County Animal Shelter in North Carolina

Rodney Southern
Up until last year, I had been fortunate to be given every single pet I had owned by close family and friends. That usually meant that I already knew the animal's temperament and habits, not to mention their history. The thought of adopting a pet through the local animal shelter never really crossed my mind. Then my daughters suddenly decided that they wanted a cat, and they made it clear to me that they were not going to quit begging. No cats were being offered in my circle of family and friends, so I found myself turning to the Guilford County Animal Shelter in Greensboro, North Carolina for the first time.

I called GCAS up on the phone and inquired about the adoption process. I also was concerned that they may not have any good cats available, which was way off base--they had more than enough options for anyone. I found out that they were open on Saturday and decided to head out there to see them firsthand. The employee on the phone was extremely helpful, and made me feel as though adopting would be easy and rewarding.

That Saturday, I loaded the kids and the wife up and headed out to the Guilford County Animal Shelter to secure our new feline family member. When we got there, I let the kids know that they would have the final say of which cat we took home, but that they would be responsible to feed it. We wanted an indoor only cat as well. Short of these basic parameters, we were going in blind and oblivious to what we would end up with.

After another nice employee at the animal shelter showed us to the cats, we were stunned at the number available. There were so many that it made my heart ache for them all. My kids begged to get them all, of course, but after some direct conversation they realized that it was one or none. We let them look around for a bit and they eventually settled on a beautiful black kitten named Simon.

The shelter knew nothing about the cat's history, but they did say that he was found on the side of the road. The adoption process was quick and easy, and the fees were very reasonable at Guilford County Animal Shelter. We paid $80.00 and that included the adoption, vaccines, micro-chip for identification, 45 days of cat insurance, a checkup and even flea and tick control. They also made sure our little Simon would not create other little kittens in the future--not bad for only 80 bucks.

Thanks to the Guilford County Animal Shelter in Greensboro, North Carolina, we now have Simon LeBeau Southern living in our home and running the show. The cat has pretty well taken over my home, and we would not have it any other way. If not for this great animal shelter, he might still be on the side of the road somewhere.

I highly recommend the Guilford County Animal Shelter to anyone considering adopting a pet of any kind. They are courteous, knowledgeable and reasonable in their fees. What more could you ask for from an aminal shelter?
