The adoption process varies from place to place. I believe most are similar though. There are fees, at least there are at most everyone I have looked into in my town. There are two basic reasons for these fees. One is because these dogs will be spayed or neutered, have all up to date shots, micro-chipped, and will have been seen by a vet. So they will be ready to go. Also the shelter makes sure they are ready to be placed in a home. Some might have the whole family come in to interact with the dog before bringing it home. Now the second reason for the fees, is to help the shelter care for the animals and give them what they need.
I would suggest getting the older, more mature dogs. So they can enjoy the last years of there life. Most times, I have heard, puppies go much faster. Which leaves the older dogs lonely in the shelter. I feel they deserve a good life too. I know a purebred puppy sounds fun and exciting, but try to think about the dogs already on the earth and how they have less of a chance to get a good home. Look at the homeless and abused animals instead, they are just as cute!
Right now I am looking into adopting a dog from a local shelter. Let me tell you I am excited. Now I thought my little dog could use some company. So I decided it would be a great idea.I found it to be very sad when I heard how many dogs will be uthenized due to the overcrowding in these shelters. Also there is not enough funds or help. The horrible reality was that these poor Innocent dogs never had a chance. A chance at a loving family or a great life.
I have seen some adorable dogs that are waiting to be adopted. So try and consider a pet from a shelter. I hope this article can give you a small view of there lives and what these animals deserve. Imagine saving them and giving them everything you can that would be possible. Love, a Family and a Wonderful Home.
