Adrian Plots, Ben Shows Dark Side on 'Secret Life of the American Teenager'

COMMENTARY | This week on "Secret Life of the American Teenager," Adrian (Francia Raisa) and Ben (Kenny Baumann) continued on their spiral of dysfunctionality.

Adrian, who had been inconsolable throughout her postpartum mourning period, snapped out of it by plotting to hang onto her man. Of course, these plots involved more lies and manipulation.

Last week, she tested Ben by asking if he would support her going to cosmetology school in New York (as opposed to finishing high school and pursuing a law career as originally planned). Ben had no qualms about her going to New York, as education would provide a potential exit plan from his marriage.

When that didn't work, she called her doctor to ask when she could try for another baby. Of course, that didn't stop her from calling her ex, Ricky (Daren Kagasoff), who would probably be glad to get her out of that marriage.

Adrian finally decided to clean out the nursery in order to prepare for a second baby. Unfortunately for her, she neglected to consult Ben before sending the furniture and decor off to the church nursery. She inadvertently donated Ben's teddy bear, which had been a gift from his deceased mother, the last item he had from her.

Squeaky-clean Ben finally snapped. He unleashed months of anger and frustration toward his shot-gun wife, telling her about his guilt over cheating on Amy (Shailene Woodley), telling her about how the baby had been the only positive thing to come out of their misdeed, and that they deserved to lose her because of what they did to Amy and Ricky. He also finally came clean about the fact that he never wanted to marry her.

Adrian's reaction was a bit scary, given how calculating she is. She went on a wall-punching rage before settling into deep contemplation. What does she have up her sleeve now? Given how Ben is turning to alcohol, could she seduce him in a drunken stupor and end up pregnant again? Or will she find her way back to Ricky's bed?

As Ben woefully observed, he never thought freshman year would be his best year of high school. Although Ben is likely thinking of leaving Adrian to pursue Amy, I've always felt that Grace (Megan Park) would be a better match. They could have had a shot if Adrian hadn't decided to seduce Ben after the school dance. Some best friend!

While Ben is stuck in an unhappy marriage to Adrian, Amy is stuck in an unhappy non-marriage to Ricky. As George (Mark Derwin) pointed out, Ricky is not the type to make that kind of commitment. While Amy enjoys living with him, she is more conservative girl who would eventually want some kind of proposal. Could she go running back to serial husband Ben?

"Secret Life of the American Teenager" airs on Mondays at 8/7c on ABC Family.
