Adult Halloween Party Ice Breakers

How to Get Spooky Started!

Jan Peterson
Halloween costumes are important at a Halloween party, of course, but just as important are the party activities. To get a Halloween party started, it helps to have some fun ice breaker games for the whole party group. Here are two party ice breaker ideas, with a Halloween twist.

Halloween Ice Breaker Game #1: What is My Grisly Murder Weapon?

For this ice breaker, each spooky Halloween guest is greeted at the door and gets an image of a bloody weapon pinned to the back of his costume. The idea of this ice breaker is for each party guest to try to figure what weapon is pinned to his back by asking probing questions of other guests. "Would this grisly weapon cause a slow death?" "Would this grisly weapon remove a limb?" "Is this grisly weapon metal?" Anything goes!

Each guest asks one question and then moves on to the next guest, until he guesses correctly, at which time he moves the weapon to the front of his costume.. This ice breaker gets everyone moving around the room, mingling with each other. Some ideas for weapons that would cause a torturous, grisly death might be:

-Guillotine
-Chainsaw
-Acid
-Ice Pick
-Cleaver
-Machete
-Sledge Hammer
-Pitchfork
-Ligature
-Noose

Halloween Party Ice Breaker Game # 2 - Team Skeleton Building

Another fun ice breaker is a team skeleton building! Buy two complete skeleton kits, such as Hugh the Human Skeleton ($12.59 Amazon), or a teaching skeleton floor puzzle ($2.15 Amazon). At the front door, have a basket full of the "bones", and a sign instructing guests to take a bone. (Mark the back of each bone piece with either black or orange)

Once the bones have all been picked up, start the game. Announce to guests that they have ½ hour to complete the skeletons. Assign two team captains (one black and one orange) who will need to organize the skeleton building at opposite ends of the party. Guests will need to team up and find the spot for their bone. Team Captains will be the only people who know that pieces are color coded. If someone brings a piece that isn't his color, he should refuse their bone, but not tell them why. As the event continues, more people will catch on, and the first team to build their skeleton wins.

Note: An option is to just buy a bag of bones from a store such as Big Lots that contains most of a skeleton's bones, and have the two teams create the best skeleton they can. It won't be perfect, but the fun and group interaction is the same.

Now that the bloody ice is broken by a Halloween ice breaker game, let the spook-fest begin!
