Adult Incontinence Products and Care for Men and Women- An Overview

Shaw Belt
Urinary incontinence is a concern for many individuals, especially the elderly and women - who are most likely to develop incontinence. While urinary incontinence is nothing unusual, it can surely be inconvenient for sufferers. The good news is that there are strategies and products available to help individuals who suffer from urinary incontinence.

According to the National Library of Medicine, there are three types of incontinence that people may suffer from:

• Stress incontinence, which causes people to lose control of their urinary functions when under certain stresses, such as coughing, sneezing, or during exercise

• Urge incontinence, which causes sufferers to have a strong and sudden urge to urinate. This urge is followed by a bladder contraction that causes them to lose control of their bladders.

• Mixed incontinence, which includes both stress incontinence and urge incontinence.

Incontinence is also caused by a wide variety of factors, including pregnancy, weight gain, urinary tract infections, depression, enlarged prostate, nerve or muscle damage, and more. Many diabetics who suffer from urinary incontinence can have several different causes, including nerve or muscle damage caused by poor blood circulation.

Caring for incontinence

Individuals suffering from urinary incontinence have many resources that can help them care for their conditions. It is always important for them to speak with their physicians to learn more about their unique cases and to receive personalized advice. However, it may help for individuals to retain their bladders by urinating on a schedule (with or without the urge to urinate) and to do Kegel exercises, which requires them to contract the pelvic floor muscles for 10 seconds at a time.

Urinary incontinence products

There are also a wide variety of urinary incontinence products available to help individuals suffering from the condition. These products are designed for both men and women, but designs may vary based on gender. Urinary incontinence products may include items such as bed pads, which can be used at night, adult diapers or briefs, and bladder control pads. Individuals may want to try several different types of products before finding the right one for their needs. Also, some adult incontinence products are more inconspicuous than others and can, therefore, be hidden more effectively under clothing.

It is always important to speak with your doctor if you suffer from adult incontinence. In some cases, adult incontinence is a sign of another serious condition, such as an enlarged prostate or bladder cancer. The good news for adult urinary incontinence sufferers is that there is help available so minimize the impact and inconvenience of the condition for all lifestyles.
