Adult Party Games for New Year's 2009: The Game of Things

Jesse Mathewson
So the other day we had some friends over, normally we would have sat around talking about the past, or present or maybe even future work and personal relationships. While there is, a place for this one of our friends is dating a new person. Therefore, the past could be potentially uncomfortable and the future is not sure. We decided to grab a game to go with the drinks, and we found it. The perfect New Year's game for adults.

The game of Things...this game is simple to play yet can fill up hours of your night (literally) with fun and even slightly risqué things. The most important thing to remember with this game is to laugh! If your goal in game playing is winning, move to cards or chess. However, you can tally points, though after the first dozen for everyone it will not really matter. The rules are simple to follow and easy to remember. The game consists of s large stack of cards; each card has a sentence similar to the following ones. "Things you shouldn't do on the beach," or "Things people like about you," or "Things that confirm you are losing your mind."

So what are the rules, and how does this incorporate into a New Year's night of fun? Simple, at the start of the game select a "reader" or someone to read the line off first. This person selects one card and reads it aloud. All the players including the reader use a small slip of paper (included in the game of Things) and write a response. In addition, the best part is the response can be anything, remember these are your friends they know you pretty well, or do they. There is no correct answer and the line read is never a question. The reader than reads all of the responses aloud once and than a second time so that players can remember them. (Keywords here help to remember each line)The player to the left of the reader now gets the first guess as to who wrote which response. If he or she is, correct than that player is eliminated (the one chosen.) If a player guesses correctly, they get another chance. If they chose incorrectly, the turn continues left, until one player is left. Obviously the reader is reading, the game continues until either you are worn out or each person has been reader. There are ways to score it, however to be honest we used the simple 1 point system and disregarded the other ways.

Remember, this is a game for your New Year's festivities and should be treated as fun. Change up your handwriting, think of something to write that may be different from what you normally do. On the other hand, you can copy someone else's thought process's if you know they usually answer with animal phrases use one of your own. There are endless possibilities to this game and it is extremely enjoyable. So for this New Year's party for the older people in your life, remember sitting and talking is great, playing a great game is better!

Start with the theme (THe Game of THings) and the variations could be endless. Interesting! Of course, if people were uptight, I could see how a few rules could be added. Really, it could be adapted to fit nearly any group.
