The Good Student Discount is an easy way to save about 20% on your auto insurance. This can save you hundreds of dollars a year, or thousands of dollars during the eligibility period for this discount. If you have more than one student covered by your insurance then the savings will just multiply.
Qualifying for the Good Student Discount
There are only a few requirements that need to be met in order to qualify for the Good Student Discount for auto insurance. (Keep in mind that these qualifications will vary by auto insurance carrier.) The first qualification is that the student has to be enrolled in school full-time. Full-time status of a student is equivalent to about 25 hours of high school a week, four classes per semester for undergraduate college students or three classes per semester for graduate college students.
The next qualification is that the student has to maintain good grades. For this discount, good grades are defined as maintaining a 3.0 G.P.A., or a B average. Usually being listed on an Honor Roll, the Dean's List or other similar honorary lists is a good indicator that the student will qualify for a Good Student Discount.
The final qualification is that the student has to meet age limits. The youngest age a student can be and still qualify for this discount is 16 and the oldest that they can be is 24. This age range is fairly standard among the major insurance carriers. This means that adult learners (25 and older) will not qualify for this particular auto insurance discount.
Getting the Discount
If you or a driver covered under your insurance policy qualifies for this discount then there are a couple of steps you will need to take to claim the discount. First of all you will need to talk with your insurance agent to see what proof they will require to apply the discount to your policy. Most insurance providers will require physical proof of good grades, such as a report card, transcripts or award letters for the Dean's List or an Honor Roll program.
Once you have your proof in hand you will be able to officially request the discount. To do this all you will have to do is talk to your agent and tell him or her that you want the Good Student Discount.
The final step will be to support the continuation of this discount. If you are the student whose academic performance is the source of the discount then you will need to continue to study and earn good grades. If your child is the student in question then you will want to encourage them to be diligent in their studies and positively reinforce their hard work with praise and other rewards.
