"Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet."
Albert Einstein
Introduction
Ref. 1 suggests that schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are not two distinct identities, but rather are two points on a continuum.
"This meta-analysis provides direct evidence for familial coaggregation of schizophrenia and BD, a finding that argues against the view that these disorders are entirely discrete diagnostic entities. Rather, a continuum model is supported."

Linus Pauling and Orthomolecular Medicine
Linus Pauling was always controversial and usually right (2, 19). Pauling's work has been carried on by Hoffer & Saul (3).
Saul
Saul is also controversial (4, 5). Saul feels that supposedly incurable diseases may be treatable (6). I agree with Saul on this. We simply do not understand some diseases that may be treatable. When we don't understand a disease, the treatments are trial & error, as is often the case in psychiatry. Saul is critical of the medical Establishment (8).
Saul is the editor of Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine.
Challem
Challem favors nutritional treatments in psychiatry (9).
Kaufman
Kaufman, now deceased, favored nutritional medicine (11).
Hoffer
"Drugs make a well person sick. Why would they make a sick person well?" (Abram Hoffer, M.D., Ph.D.)
Multiple Sclerosis
There is even a vitamin theory of multiple sclerosis (14, 15).
Cancer
There are vitamin theories for cancer (16, 17).
The Food Allergy Theory
The food allergy theory, which is the theory I favor, is explained in Refs. 21-23. Dohan was one of the early doctors who favored this theory. He thought that schizophrenics were allergic to glutamine, which is found in milk and wheat gluten. Glutamine is an amino acid that is abundant in the brain.
My own view is that Dohan was close, but he had the wrong amino acid. My view is that the different forms of mental illness, including both schizophrenia and depression, are food allergies ot tryptophan. There is too much tryptophan in the brains of these unfortunates due to a metabolic error. I favor a diet very low in tryptophan.
Psychiatric Drugs
Unfortunately there have been very serious problems with psychiatric drugs (24, 25). These drugs, like many other drugs, are metabolized in the liver, which is supposed to protect the body from poisons. The body treats these drugs as poisons.
Conclusions
Because of the many serious problems with psychiatric drugs (26), they may not be the best treatments. Also they are very expensive, and often the taxpayers pay much of the bills.
"These data show that clozapine can cause memory impairment and it potentiates rather than reverses hippocampal lesion-induced deficits."

The above quote is from Ref. 27. Shock treatment also is harmful to memory. Shock treatment has a side effect of memory loss.
Because of these facts I recommend orthomolecular treatments. The food allergy theory is considered orthomolecular even though it does not involve megavitamins. This treatment would save the taxpayers massive amounts of money. A low protein diet is cheaper than the average diet. The patient also saves money because there are no copayments. Amazingly the Republicans, who are supposed to want to save money, have taken no interest in this.
