Advantages of an Extra Part-Time Job--not Just Money!

There Are Reasons for Working an Extra Part-time Job Other Than Another Paycheck

You may be thinking that the advantages of having an extra part-time job are pretty obvious. Of course, the first benefit everybody thinks about is extra income. That is a nice perk of working a few extra hours each week, but there are also some non-monetary advantages.

VARIETY

Working at a job different from your usual 9-5, day-to-day employment gives you a diversion from unavoidable monotony. No matter how much you love your day job, you would probably confess that there are days when you are on auto-pilot, and doing something different would liven things up a bit. A part-time job in a field other than your main source of income can help overcome the pitfall of being in a work-related rut.

ORGANIZATION

I have heard it said many times that the busiest people get the most done. Maybe that is because they must, out of necessity, organize their time to get everything done. I am sometimes amazed at friends who work several jobs, raise several kids, and volunteer for several organizations and yet always seem to be prompt and efficient. Perhaps, the less time there is to waste, the more productive we learn to become in the time allotted each day.

FUTURE FUNDS

All of us baby boomers who are seeing retirement just around the corner are becoming aware of the fact that we may be working longer than we once expected. That part-time job may one day help supplement our retirement income. With more hours to invest and a few more years of experience, part-time employment may grow into a lucrative full-time job in the future. How rewarding it would be to be doing work you love after you have "retired" from your lifetime career. How much more rewarding it would be to feel more financially secure because of that part-time-become-full-time job!

There are many opportunities for part-time employment. Many retail stores are now hiring part-time workers to save on benefit costs. Hundreds of start-up home-based businesses are flourishing. Find a part-time job that appeals to your interests, and make a little extra money while you enjoy a diversion from your usual routine.
