Advantages of International Medical Schools

Some potential medical students would rather attend one of the many international medical schools than attend a medical college in the United States. Although international medical schools may not be for everybody, there are certain advantages to attending.

Depending on which international medical school you choose, the tuition is most likely going to be cheaper than a U.S. medical school. Also, in some countries, the cost of living is going to be much cheaper, so if you are looking to save money on your medical school costs then this may be one way to accomplish that.

If you have been denied entrance into a medical school in the United States, you may still be able to apply for an international med school. They usually fill up a lot slower and will accept med students with much shorter notice. This can again save you time and money. Most students like to take a prep course for the MCAT, which can get expensive. It also takes money to take the exam as well.

If you know anything about medical school, you know that you are going to spend the first two years of it studying, studying, and studying some more. Some students may find their regular social lives at home a distraction. When you still have all your friends around you, it can be tempting to blow off studying and hang with your friends instead. When you go to an international medical school, all the friends that you will make will be other med students. You are not going to have your good friends with you to distract you. If you know that you will not be able to really give medical school all your attention at home while around friends and family, then an international medical school does have that advantage.

Some European medical schools take students straight out of high school instead of requiring them to already have a bachelor's degree. The program lasts 6 years instead of the normal 4 years of med school. This is an option for a student right out of high school who knows that they want to be a doctor and not waste time with other college coursework.

At international medical schools you may get to work with famous international doctors that you would never get to work with in the United States. There are tons of international doctors that are the cutting edge and have made great discoveries and a lot of them work with the medical programs.

Lastly, for someone who has always dreamed of living outside of the U.S. in some exotic country, an international medical school may be the perfect getaway.

You must take the licensing test if you want to do your residency in the United States and must be aware of all the rules regarding that as well.
