With an unlocked iPhone, you are not restricted to having your iPhone on the carrier that you bought your iPhone from, unless you purchased your iPhone as part of a package. Many cell phone and smart phone servers have usage plans, usually two to three years in length, where you can get your iPhone for free, or at least for a ridiculously low price, like $29.99 when you sign up for one of these very lengthy plans. However, if you do have a package deal, and are stuck with your present carrier until your current contract ends, jailbreaking your iPhone still has many advantages.
And, besides, who knows what technologies are just a few months away, let alone three whole years down the road, which is an eternity with high technology breakthroughs and amazing new apps for smart phones like the Droid and the iPhone these days. Signing up for a three-year plan, just to be able to get an iPhone for a really cheap price will end up costing you more in the long run than if you had just bought the iPhone alone, as you will be stuck with the rates and extra fees that you agreed to when you signed up. There is no shopping around until the end of the plan you agreed to, and if new and better smart phones come out, you will either be stuck with your current smart phone and plan, or have to pay exorbitant fees to get out of your existing contract, usually $20 to $50 per remaining month.
With sole ownership, and not being stuck with one carrier for three years, you can shop around for cheaper, shorter plans, go back and forth between carriers for better data transmission rates, and cheaper all-inclusive, pay-as-you-go plans. Of course, being able to use the apps from providers other than Apple is a major bonus as well, since Apple seems to have one of the fewer total amounts of apps for their end users, and seem to like making their customers use only Apple apps.
When using an iPhone that has been jailbroken (jailbreaked? Who keeps up with all of these new words and their extensions?), you can download apps that allow you to do things like use Bluetooth wireless keyboards for typing, or record a sample of a song, and find out who sings it and where you can buy it or download it from. With an iPhone, the reason for lugging around that heavy laptop and carry-all bag with all of it's accessories, discs and other laptop related gear inside it is gone. You can now do pretty much anything your laptop can do, if it is turned on and online while you are using your iPhone with the required apps.
Everyone has seen the "there really is an app for everything", and "there's an app for that" commercials, and yet, before jail breaking iPhones became the newest trick on the block, you needed to have 2 or 3 different smart phones, connected to 2 or 3 different carriers, to get access to all of those apps. Now, with a jailbroken iPhone, there really is an app for that, no matter what that may be (well, within reason, of course!).
So, jailbreak away! It is finally time to take back what is ours and use it the way we see fit.
