The Global Positioning System is commonly known as the 'GPS'. It was developed by the US Department of Defense. Though, this system has been primarily used by the Armed forces. But, apart from this, it also has many commercial applications and the number of people who access & use this kind of technology is continuously increasing.

Now, GPS is also available with Cell phones. A Cell phone which has GPS capability is called as GPS Cell phone. With the help of such phones, it is possible to use the GPS anytime. Moreover, the GPS cell phones can be used anywhere. Their use is not limited just to a car, as is the case with some other devices. All of the best cell phones that are available in the market today are equipped with GPS and there is a high probability that all the phones in the future will have GPS installed on them.

Another option for GPS cellular phones are the traditional GPS systems. But, their use has several disadvantages. First of all, due to their large size, it is difficult to take them out of the Car. Secondly, their cost is comparatively higher. Even the cheapest model available today costs about 200 US dollars. Hence, GPS cell phones are more economical as no additional system is required any more.

One of the facts that make GPS popular is that it is really useful in an emergency situation. Suppose, you are lost somewhere or you are roaming in an unfamiliar area searching for a service station as you are running out of gas. Moreover, with the help of these, you can tell people about your exact location, so as to make it easier for them to easily get you.

If you have GPS on cell phone, emergency personnel can determine your exact location. Though, most people believe that it is easy to trace them when they call 911, but, tracing cell phones is sometimes problematic. If you have GPS, this problem is eliminated to a great extent. Hence, there is no need to worry about getting stuck somewhere where no one is available for help.

With utilization of a GPS, making maps can become completely outdated. At last, what is the need of having a map when easily readable instructions are available at the click of a finger? Independent of the address, the GPS software installed in a cell phone can quickly suggest how to reach your destination.

GPS can also be helpful for parents to know the location of their children in order to ensure their safety. However, the teenagers are unwilling to have this feature, especially, when used without their knowledge. Before parents track their children, they must clearly inform them about this.

The efficiency of the technology is continuously increasing. Surely, this will soon make GPS available to everyone who has a cellular phone. The days of being lost in the Arizona Deserts or Colorado mountains will soon be a thing of past. This will make people feel a lot safer while they are driving in a territory which is unknown to them.
