Advantages of Using Silk Wedding Flowers Instead of Fresh Flowers

A Florist Explains the Advantages of Using Permanent Botanicals to Decorate Your Wedding

Kylyssa Shay
Silk flowers are often touted as an inexpensive alternative to fresh floral wedding decorations and that is not always true as described in my article Silk Wedding Flowers Are NOT Always Less Expensive than Fresh but They Can Be. However, many people don't talk about the other advantages of using artificial wedding flowers.

One great thing about using silk flowers to design your own wedding decorations is that they are very tough. If you bend the stem wrong the fabric flowers will not break off nor will their blooms be bruised by inexpert handling. Silk flowers can be delivered by the most inexperienced of helpful volunteers without any fear of your wedding flowers arriving damaged. Extremes of heat and cold won't hurt them either so no refrigeration or air conditioning is needed during transport or at any other time.

Because silk flowers last a very long time you can take your time learning how to make them look good. You can buy your budget silk flowers many months in advance and work on making your bouquets and other arrangements. Silk flowers give you plenty of time to work with. If it takes you a whole day to duplicate your favorite bridal bouquet photo in silk flowers it doesn't matter, the flowers won't wilt!

Another advantage of using silk wedding flowers is that you can try different looks, arranging and re-arranging your flowers until you discover what you like best. You can also know exactly how your bouquets and arrangements will look long before your wedding day. This should give you a bit of peace of mind.

With silk wedding flowers you can use flowers that aren't in season naturally, you can match fabric swatches and other color samples with confidence, and you can use flowers the real versions of which are too delicate to stand up well in floral arrangements.

Silk flowers are also very forgiving. If you cut the stem too short you can use a little wire and florist tape to fix it. If a flower head falls off you can glue it right back on with a dab of hot glue. If you don't like how your arrangement looks after it's finished, you can tear it apart and start over - without ruining a single flower!

The use of silk flowers in your wedding also allows you a backup plan in case you aren't satisfied with the way they look when you arrange them. If you spend a lot of time on them and still are not satisfied, you can fall back on your florist who can arrange them for a fee. Fresh flowers don't allow enough time for that, there are no easy backup plans if you flub arranging your own fresh wedding flowers.

When it comes to ease of set up, nothing beats artificial flowers! They don't need to be arranged in water or wet floral foam so fabric flowers are much, much lighter than their fresh floral counterparts. Due to their lighter weight silk flowers are easier to attach to pews in churches and onto garden arches. Because silk flowers don't wilt you can set them up at churches and reception venues as soon as you are allowed entry. Again, this allows you time to take your time and get it right rather than having to rush around like a madman on your wedding day and possibly make a mess of things.

So now you can probably see that money isn't the only thing you can save by using silk flowers to decorate your wedding.

I did silk flowers for my daughter's wedding. They were beautiful and she was able to use them for years; thus extending the happy memories of her day.
