Advantages of working for a small company:
More Personal- Working for a small business has the advantage of being a more personal experience because there are fewer people to deal with. People truly get to know one another in this type of situation. You can form closer and better relationships. The owners of the company are even usually closer to their employees than that of a large corporation type business. This is a major advantage because it makes you feel more like you have a home rather than just a business.
Work Hours- Your work hours will likely be a lot more reasonable with a small company than with a large corporation. Smaller companies don't have as much to deal with as the larger corporations do. That means that you will have more personal time than you would with a large corporation. Large corporations often require that you spend upwards of 60 hours working in a week. Most smaller corporations don't require it nor do they have the resources to pay for it. That means you will have more family time or whatever you choose to do with your free time. People with families would benefit greatly from working for a small company rather than a large one.
Easier Scheduling of Vacations- Since there aren't as many employees in a smaller company, it is easier to schedule the vacation time that you want to take off rather than being stuck if someone has already taken the dates that you want. Large corporations usually have a good vacation package deal for their employees, but it isn't always easy to schedule those vacations. Along with having many other employees who want the same dates off, there are often black out dates in larger companies where no one can take time off. This can be a huge advantage to working for a smaller business than it is to work for a large corporation.
Transfers- There is little to no chance that you will be told you are being transferred from one site to the other when you work for a small company. Large corporations often move their employees to other areas to work. Smaller companies don't usually have other facilities and if they do, they are generally relatively close to the first facility. If you want to be sure that you don't get transferred, look for a small company with no other facilities that you could be transferred to.
Working for a smaller company will allow you a little more freedom. You aren't likely to have to work nearly as many hours with a small company. The pay isn't always as good as it could be with a large corporation, but you will get a fair wage. That is the most important thing that you can ask for in any job. Don't get caught up in the idea that a large corporation is the only place that you can find happiness in your job. You can find great jobs with small companies that would love to have you as part of their team. Give it a lot of thought while in the process of deciding what type of company you want to work for.
