Adventures in America: The Black Hills

A Diamond in the Rough

Kristina Jones
Summer is nearing and you might be wondering where you should go for your summer vacation. There are many great places in North America that are inviting and adventurous. As a child, my parents would take us on a vacation at least once a year. We would camp at some of the most beautiful locations in the United States. One of my favorite places to visit was the Black Hills in South Dakota.

The Black Hills are a perfect place to visit. If you are not an outdoors person, you might not like visiting the Black Hills. In order to get the most out of your Black Hills experience, you should camp at one of the many campgrounds. We used to camp at a Custer's State Park. If you will want to camp in the Black Hills, make sure you take your vacation in the summer months, as South Dakota can become very cold in the winter months.

While you are visiting the Black Hills, make a note to enjoy all the wildlife. There are plenty of trails to walk. While you walk these trails, try to enjoy the view of the outdoors. It offers an inviting and relaxing environment.

You do not need to just walk along the trails to enjoy the Black Hills. If you are up for a little drive, you can visit Mount Rushmore. The first time I was at the Black Hills, I really wanted to see Mount Rushmore. Unfortunately, it had become some what deteriorated, but it was still a great site see. All children, and adults, can appreciate the monument which depicts four of the greatest presidents of the United States.

There are other activities you can enjoy, while visiting the Black Hills. If you decide to visit one of the small western towns located in the Black Hills, you might be surprised to find yourself in a sort of old western setting. These small towns offer many shops where you can purchase your Black Hills souvenirs. You can also find some great Black Hills gold jewelry shops in these towns. I remember one of these towns we visited had a reenactment of a shootout each day in the afternoon. It was pretty fun and the kids will enjoy seeing this reenactment.

Another activity you can do is visit the Crazy Horse Monument. The Crazy Horse Monument is not completely finished yet. The face was completed in 1998, but there is still the body and the horse that need to be completed. Even in its construction stage, it is an amazing site. I remember the first time we were there, all they had was the chalk drawing of the face. We went back two years later and the face was almost completed. If you want to give your children a good history lesson, visiting the Black Hills can provide one of the best.

There are other activities you can enjoy at the Black Hills. There are forts which you can visit. These are preserved and offer little gift shops and little tidbits of history. Some of these forts may even have some animals native to the area, such as buffalo. If you visit the Black Hills make a point in visiting at least one fort.

The Black Hills have other tourist activities for your enjoyment. One of the best activities is to go horseback riding. This was always my favorite. You can take a horseback riding session and have a guided trail ride. This is very relaxing and the ride will give you a new way to enjoy the Black Hills area. If you are not much for horseback riding try a bike trail or hop on a rented moped to enjoy the Black Hills experience.

Why not get your camping gear together and hit the road to the Black Hills of South Dakota? You can enjoy your horseback riding, trail walks, and national monuments all at the same time. Hopefully, you will have a great experience when you vacation to the Black Hills.
