Adventures in Babysitting: All Grown Up, so Where Are They Now?
A Current Look at the Stars of 1987's Cult Classic
1987's Adventures in Babysitting is being remade, and set to star some of today's hottest teenage actors such as Miley Cyrus (of Hannah Montana fame) and Raven Symone. (The first time the movie hit theaters these stars perhaps weren't around to need a babysitter!)
As a celebration of the remake, here is a look at where the original Adventures in Babysitting stars are now:
Elizabeth Shue (Chris Parker)
Elizabeth Shue was the star of Adventures in Babysitting, rather the babysitter who literally had a wild ride for what should have been an easy job. (That's what you get for going out for ice cream, huh?) Adventures was not her first film role, as she previously appeared in The Karate Kid. (Before that, she was in a Burger King commercial.) Shue went on to become a pretty decent film star. Right after Adventures, she starred with Michael J. Fox in the Back to the Future II and III as Jennifer McFly. Other successful films she starred in were Soapdish, Leaving Las Vegas, Heart and Souls, City of Angels, Hollow Man and Hide and Seek.
Keith Coogan (Brad Anderson)
Keith Coogan played the older teenage brother who has a crush on the babysitter. Of course, he thinks he's too old to have a babysitter. Coogan's role in Adventures in Babysitting actually came to him in mid-career. He had been acting since 1978 in various guest and starring roles in memorable television shows and movies, including Fantasy Island, Knight Rider, Mork and Mindy, the Waltons, Little House on the Praire and It's a Living.
Coogan's biggest role outside of Adventures in Babysitting happens to be another adventure in babysitting-Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. After that movie in 1991, he was also in Toy Soldiers, but his acting career seems to be just made of scattered appearance in the late 90s into the 2000s. Today, his MySpace page he's an actor, writer and director and has several short films under his belt.
Anthony Rapp (Daryl)
Anthony Rapp is not just a star on the screen, but on the stage as well. Prior to Adventures in Babysitting (where he plays Brad Anderson's best friend), Rapp appeared on Broadway. And, that's what he's been doing since. After Adventures, Rapp appeared in several other films such as School Ties, Dazed and Confused, Road Trip, A Beautiful Mind and more. In 1996, he originated the role of Mark Cohen in Rent, and in recent years, reprised the role in the stage and screen version of the musical. He also performed on the Broadway tour of Little Shop of Horrors.
Rapp is an activist for LBGT issues, and in fact, he and his partner, actor Rodney Tol are looking to adopt. He also wrote a memoir called Without You: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and the Musical Rent, which honors his mother who passed away from cancer.
Penelope Ann Miller
Miller's character Brenda and her being stranded at the bus stop downtown is the catalyst for action of the entire movie. Adventures in Babysitting was Miller's debut film role, however she previously was nominated for a Tony Award for her role as Emily in Our Town. After Adventures, Miller went on to star in Awakenings, Kindergarten Cop, Carlito's Way, Chaplin and more recently in the title role of All-American Girl: The Mary Kay Letourneau Story. She remarried in 2000 and later had a daughter.
Maia Brewton (Sara Anderson)
Perhaps Brewton's role of bright-eyed Sara Parker is best remember by the Thor hat, complete with wings. After Adventures in Babysitting at age nine, she had a small role in Back to the Future and starred as Shelly (or as Parker called her, ("Shelly Belly") in the television show Parker Lewis Can't Lose. A Google search of her name revealed that she is doing independent films and theater productions as of late, including The Girl in the Flammable Skirt. It also appears that she graduated from Yale, as she is credited in a Yale theater production as class of 1998.
