Located in downtown Johnstown, the Johnstown flood museum allows visitors a glimpse into the past. Guests are given a look back to the 1889 flood which crippled the city of Johnstown. The academy award winning film, "The Johnstown Flood" is also shown at various times during the tours. Many photographs, news articles and other relics allow museum patrons to relive the historic event.
After you take in the historic tragedy of the Johnstown Flood museum, head over to Prince Gallitzin State Park in northern Cambria County. Located on over 6,000 acres, Prince Gallitzin State Park is a favorite destination of outdoorsmen. Boating, fishing and swimming can be found at Glendale Lake located in the park. There are camping grounds and nature trails for anybody who is not interested in water activities. Winters in Prince Gallitzin State Park offers snowmobile enthusiasts a trail that can also be used by hikers and mountain bike riders in the spring and summer. Before leaving Prince Gallitzin State Park, be sure to hike up to the water tower for the best view of the entire area. There are picturesque sites as far as the eye can see, including Lake Glendale, the immense wooded area and nearby farmer's fields. Best of all nature is free to all visitors. There is no admission charge so bring a picnic and enjoy the day.
From the great outdoors head underground to the Seldom Seen Mine. Located on route 36 near the town of Patton, the Seldom Seen Mine offers visitors a glimpse into a once real working mine. Now exclusively for site seeing, tourists are guided by former miners, some are actually relatives of the original miners who immigrated to the area years ago. If you are in Cambria County around Halloween, the Seldom Seen Mine celebrates the holiday with a haunted mine tour.
Just because you are surrounded by the rolling hills of Pennsylvania does not mean you have to sit around the house all day. Cambria County is the perfect destination for the outdoorsmen or the history enthusiast. It is rich in culture and truly appreciates the past that has made Pennsylvania what it is today.
