Adventures of Ford Fairlane is a 1990 Comedy that I Can't Believe I Sorta Liked!
I Can't Believe I Actually Watched This... And Thought it was Kind of Funny!
Minor Plot Details
Ford Fairlane is known around LA as the Rock n' Roll Detective. His specialty is celebrity cases, and they tend to pay him in stuff that does him no good (a gold watch, a koala bear, stuff like that). His DJ friend asks him to find his "daughter" Zuzu, but Ford isn't too interested... until his friend ends up dead! Then another girl comes into the picture and offers Ford $5000 to find her sister "Zuzu". The cash peaks his interest and he's on the case! What's going on in this messed up town? And who the heck is Art Mooney? These are just a few things you'll try to guess at, and probably figure out before the movie ends.
Actors
Andrew Dice Clay is Ford Fairlane - and I finally understand that Saturday Night Live skit about "Andrea Dice Clay". If you are as clueless as I was before this movie, let me clue you in. He's rude, crude, and VERY cheesy! But it is 1990 so I guess it's ok. At first, the cheesy lines he says seem so corny that I couldn't believe I was watching this, but as the movie went on I started to find the crazy things he says funny.
Ford Fairlane: I'm so terrific I have my own toll-free number: 1-800-UNBELIEVABLE.
Wayne Newton plays some big record producer guy. Before this movie, I had only seen Wayne Newton on an episode of Rosanne. He was good, and fit well with the movie, but it was kind of strange seeing Wayne Newton in a movie at all.
Maddie Corman played Zuzu. At first I was like "how stupid can this chick be??" and she was annoying in the first few scenes. However, just like Andrew's character, I got used to her as the movie went on and it got to a point where she was funny too.
My (un)organized thoughts
This is definitely a movie that only worked because of the time period it was released. Had it been released today, it would have been considered a spoof because it is so silly. I guess in the 1990s, this was hilarious - but nowadays, it's only funny in a nostalgic way.
The language may seem rude and crude, but it's really no worse than these nasty R rated movies they like to pump out now. Besides language, there wasn't anything else R rated in the movie that I remembered.
The movie was predictable a lot of times and I kept guessing the outcome of each scene minutes before it happened. This didn't take away the fun though, because I enjoyed the way they actually explained the mystery and it was fun in itself to guess what may happen (and to be right). I can't say I guessed everything though, there was enough surprise in the movie to make it entertaining.
I wouldn't give this 5 stars, but it was a solid 4. As a comedy, I laughed quite a bit once I got used to the cheesy characters. As an action flick, it wasn't bad there either and actually had some pretty decent action scenes. This certainly isn't a serious thriller, and I'm not even sure it was a serious action movie, but it definitely was interesting to watch. So if you are looking for something different from the norm, and you miss those 90s flicks, than check out Adventures of Ford Fairlane today!

Post a CommentAh, you bring back some memories. I remember watching this movie as a teenager and thinking that it was funny. I bought the DVD two years ago (it was in the dollar bin at Wal-mart) so I could watch it again but haven't found time for it. it had a great cast (lots of big names at the time) but I agree that as an adult, I probably wouldn't find the humor as funny. But in any case, good article.
