My soap company, Sun Drenched Soaps is just a few months old. Already, I've learned so much. For instance, when I first started my soap making adventures, I thought I knew what my niche would be. I was positive people would appreciate the cruelty free ingredients more than anything. As it turns out, I was partially right.
People like different aspects of my soap. I don't have just one niche. I have several. That makes getting the word out somewhat of a challenge. Most businesses have one typical demographic they market to. In my case, I have more than one. Which aspect I highlight depends largely on who I'm targeting.
My soap is:
*All natural*Cruelty free
*Hypoallergenic (unscented soaps only)
*Handmade
*Detergent free
*Sulfate free
*Metal free (Glycerin soaps only)
I shouldn't have been surprised at the most popular reason people like my soap. After all, it's the reason I started making it. It's the sensitive skin factor. Many people, myself included, have allergic reactions to the chemical compounds found in factory made soap. My soaps are chemical free. Allergic reactions are rare.
I had hoped my signature Night and Day Soap Duet would be more popular. It's a concept my boyfriend and I came up with. One wakes you up, the other soothes you to sleep. Actually, people are more impressed that we can make their soap to order. They choose a soap base and a scent for a custom blend. I should have known that concept would take off. Not many soap companies offer such a thing.
I get great product ideas from potential customers. Our website has a contact form. I also have a large network of online friends. I encourage product suggestions. I knew there would be some input. What I didn't realize is how invaluable my online community would be. They've offered numerous suggestions for future products. One member of my online circle even gave my soap an unbiased promotional review.
The biggest surprise of all is how much my customers really do like my soap. This business is still in it's infancy. Still, everyone who's tried my soap gives positive feedback. Having my own soap business has already been both rewarding and surprising. I can't wait to see what's in store when it really takes off!
