Adventures in Somerset County, Pennsylvania
Located on Route 31, just minutes from the town of Somerset is Shanksville. This small community will go down in history for being the crash site of flight 93 on September 11, 2001. The town has embraced their place in history and has since constructed a Memorial Chapel and allows visitors to take in the scene of the impact site. The Memorial Chapel is located in a church building that was built in 1902. It is non-denominational and serves as a place for worship, prayer or mediation. The theme of this Memorial Chapel is One Nation Under God.
Just 20 minutes west of Shanksville lies the town of Rockwood and the Rockwood Mill Shoppes and Opera House. This building includes a three story section which once served as a feed mill and a two story section which at the same time was an opera house. Traveling performers frequented the building in the early 1900's and their presence can still be seen on the dressing room walls. Small statements were left by performers and have been preserved by the owners who have painstakingly restored the building to its original splendor. Dinner shows are scheduled throughout the year. Visitors don't have to wait for a scheduled show to visit the Rockwood Mill Shoppes and Opera House. Inside there are local vendors and restaurants available including local pizzeria and an ice cream stand.
Before leaving Somerset County, head over to the town of Berlin. Located at Singing Hill is an emu farm that offers free tours and a gift shop. Emus are large, flightless birds and are used for their meat and oil. Call or e-mail ahead of time to schedule a tour. Before leaving the emu farm stop by the gift shop to pick up products made with the emu oil. Emu oil is rich in omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids and can be beneficial to people suffering from burns, arthritis and muscle pain.
As you can see a trip to Somerset County, Pennsylvania offers a wide variety of activities suitable for all tastes.
