Advertising - A Right to Choose?

Or Are We the Helpless Victims of a Well Planned Campaign

Advertising can be defines as an undue taking of advantage of human frailty and unawareness of products. It should be considered as immoral to aim at an individual's most weakest and vulnerable point.

Advertising is most cases do not give people a right to choose. This statement may contradict when people say that advertising is beneficial. Advertising makes them aware of a product which they later term as 'definitely good'. But in reality, advertising convinces people that they really need the product. It is the people's subconscious that leads them to do such follies. Advertising has been a major part of society since World War 2. All products with a brand name need to be advertised. Otherwise, that firm would not be able to stamp its success. Companies produce the product and the task of promoting the product is the work of the advertiser. Now the advertiser's main source of income comes from convincing the public. They device all sorts of ideas to enshrine the product's aim in people's mind. Advertising etches like carvings in stone in people's mind that a particular product is superb. People with their lack of presence of mind believe that the advertiser is right. In no matter of time, they are in the shop to buy the product.

This is violation of people's right: the right to choose what should be purchased. Circumspect people tend to avoid this mishap of being webbed in the articulate nature of advertising. But majority of the people in a society are of vulnerable minds. Advertising is so persuasive today because of intense competition.

Often wrong advertising is promoted that is wrong information about the product is aired. People don't know what ingredients are available in the product. If a harmful product reaches the society and results in some health hazard it creates a lot of upheaval. Advertisers focus mainly on persuasion rather than information. People need information before jumping out to buy the product. People are now the victims of intense advertising. Advertisers inculcate in people's mind the result of innovation. They disregard whether people's follies will lead to their spending uneconomically. A well planned campaign will often be advantageous in attracting attention.

To balance my points I would say that advertising is an industry. There is no shying away from it, people just cant live without it. Advertising tells an individual about the product and the sophistication of the brand. It advances and etches the idea of the product being good. Without advertising, people will be in the dark about what is good and what is not. Besides, advertising increases competition which leads to increased efficiency. When the efficiency increases the product is bound to have some factor which is acceptable to society.

Advertising cannot be curbed, but its disadvantages can be reduced to an extent. A product which is not advertised will be considered as an anomaly. Therefore, to accede to the rules of success a product has to be advertised. But to keep check that the cons do not outweigh the pros the government can put legislation on advertising. Harmful products should not be allowed to be exposed and wrong information should not be allowed to leak to public knowledge. Only then, the advertising sector can be kept in check.
