Advertising Your Worm Farm

Keith Dailey
Though advertising can be the most expensive part of many small businesses, your business will struggle without proper advertisement. One must think of other advertising mediums other than word of mouth, which happens to be one of the most effective medium of advertisement.

Magazines, newspapers, radio airtime and TV stations can be expensive mediums thus you get limited on the frequency of using either of them. Capital can be demanding too for any business start-up.

Your worm farm business sign should be noticeably large, legible, colorful, informative and strategically placed. While a plain, small sign can work, a bigger and more attractive sign is the best option as it captures the attention of your target audience. Put yourself in a consumer's shoes and consider the impact a small, plain, black sign will create as compared to a big colorful sign.

Your aim is to announce your presence and be welcoming to your target audience through your advert. Flyers and bulletins are other methods of advertising. You need to make use of them in such a way that you make the most out of them before they run out in terms of production cost versus returns. Before you begin placing them under car windshields consider placement.

Also consider your target customers. People shopping for toys for their young ones would not be as likely to buy your fertilizer compared to people in Laundromats, grocery stores, convenient stores, your local Walmart or large construction sites. Make sure to ask for permission from store owners before posting flyers on their store windows. Try areas like flower shops, video shops etc.

Consider demonstrating the benefits of your worm farm at the library since they have story times where guests visit during summer to entertain kids. The children are accompanied by parents or grandparents who may be fish farmers or gardeners or may own pets like reptiles and birds that need worms. Distribute color pages or bookmarks with information about your business, ensuring your contact information, especially the phone number, is indicated clearly.

Another popular method is the use of magnetic signs attached to the sides of cars. There are also economy newspapers who charge less for advertising. You may also try establishing a booth at your local farmer's flea market and ensure your worm farm is noticeable to the members of the public.

Finally, your advertisement may be futile if you don't have a business license. Check out with your area's tax laws the requirements because you may be required to have a legal permit to sell worms or other things that you may produce due to your worms such as fertilizers, compost and tea.
